SED is a non-interactive editor, commonly used as a filter or when the same series of edits must be applied to many files. While the way SED operates is fairly simple, using it effectively can involve learning a sometimes esoteric command and pattern syntax. ==================================================================== Meetings: ---------------------------------------------------------------- April 10, 6:30pm Main meeting Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester ---------------------------------------------------------------- April 16, 6:00pm Steering Committee The Steering Committee meets the Tuesday following the general 2nd Wednesday meeting at 6:00 PM in the 2nd floor training room of Daugherty Systems, located at One City Place in Creve Coeur. I'd like to invite the members of the group to share their uses of Linux with the group for the first half hour, so come prepared. After which I'll discuss some administration tips and describe how I use my Linux systems. Its my intention that this meeting provide an overview of the broad spectrum of functionality that you can enjoy after deploying Linux to your personal computer. DECUS is looking for linux enthusiasts in St. Louis to do presentations at the symposium. I received the following from Kurt Reisler (UNIX SIG Chair, DECUS US Chapter): The sessions would be the same sorts of things that usually get presented at the users group meeting. I did one in San Francisco on getting a UPS to work properly under Linux (using the genpower package). User sessions on installing Linux, getting PPP up and running, what ELF is and experience using it, life on the "bleeding edge" with the latest developmental kernels, setting up a Internet service provider under Linux, those sorts of things. Technical sessions are usually about 50 minutes in length to allow for a Q&A period. The URL relating to the St. Louis symposium can be found at http://www.decus.org/decus/events/96stlouis/index.html There is a call for participation form available there as well. Nice thing is that scheduled speakers get a day of symposium registration waived. Please contact me ( Matthew Feldt, matthew@redbird.cs.umsl.edu ) if you are interested in volunteering to do a presentation, or visit the DECUS webpage mentioned above. ------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Louis Internet Users Group The St. Louis Internet Users Group is devoted to discussing issues dealing with the Internet. Each meeting includes a presentation, question and answer session, and a discussion of new resources available on the Internet. Meetings: 2nd Monday of the month, 6:30 PM, auditorium, lower level, One City Place on Olive Street Road in Creve Coeur. Contact: Jym Barnes at (314)926-8672 (jym@stl.net) or visit their Web home page, http://www.stl.net. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), St. Louis Chapter acm Association for Computing Machinery - St. Louis Chapter Invites you to Dinner and a Presentation of "Real Time Schematics" by C. Monte Miller of van Houten Technologies, Inc Monday, April 8, 1996 Social & Dinner: 6:00 pm, Program: 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm Grone Cafeteria: 4409 Woodson Rd, 423-7880 Lecture Summary: Maintenance technicians in the field may depend on the information displayed for them on a 5" x 7" screen. This information can include complex schematic information. The Interactive Intelligent Graphic Display System (IIGDS) developed by van Houten Technologies, Inc. has revolutionized the display of schematic information. During a diagnostic operation, when the procedure requires an associated schematic view, a call is made to IIGDS. IIGDS displays the initial Area-Of-Interest schematic identified. That schematic area might include: a) a relatively small area of the schematic at great detail, b) components at opposite ends of a schematic with little interest in what lies in between, or c) the path of some signal or flow without regard to surrounding clutter. When the user has finished with the schematic, IIGDS returns control to the host environment. Since IIGDS determines what information should be displayed and how it should be displayed, IIGDS makes schematic information work for the maintainer, not the maintainer work for schematic information. Biography: Mr. Monte Miller is the President, CEO, and co-founder of van Houten Technologies, Inc. (vHTI) a company which specializes in research, development, and application of intelligent systems technologies through the computer and information sciences. Prior to founding vHTI, he worked for the University of Missouri, the Department of Defense, Advanced Systems Technologies, and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace. Mr. Miller was a contributing specialist for several programs of national prominence notably: Space Telescope, National Aero-Space Plane, Tomahawk Cruise Missile, and F/A-18E/F Aircraft. Mr. Miller has over 29 years experience with government, industry, and academia as an international consultant, teacher, author, manager, and computer information science expert. His work experience includes systems engineering and integration, computer simulation model development and validation, managing systems deployment, and support of various computers and networks. He has performed computer and communication systems design, capacity planning, operational performance management, prototype development and evaluation, and systems acquisition. He has worked and traveled in twelve countries in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Missouri - Columbia, and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Missouri - Rolla. Arrangements: Begin the cafeteria style dinner and social when you arrive. Dinner and FREE lecture are in the back room. Non-members are welcome. No registration.
