Presentation "Standards for Information Management" by Donna Hanlon, Mosby-Year Book ==================================================================== PRESENTATION: "Standards for Information Management" by Donna Hanlon, Mosby-Year Book "Standards are great: Every vendor has one." Companies which sell information (books, CDs, on-line services, etc.) must learn how to manage it. Unfortunately, most executives have no patience for "all that technical stuff." Only after running up against six- and seven-figure costs do they reluctantly start paying attention to the "details" of information management. Standards are often touted as a panacea for the problems of data interchange, but what good are standards when they proliferate at the speed of light? The presentation will address which standards are better and why. It will also explain when too much "standardization" can be incredibly counterproductive. Donna is an Editorial Systems Manager for Mosby-Year Book, a medical publisher and Times Mirror subsidiary. Her product is Physicians GenRx, a drug reference available in book, CD-ROM, and WWW form. Donna manages the GenRx SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) database and systems which produce their products. Before November 1995, she was an Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) Unit Leader for ATCOM (Aviation & Troop Command). Donna has been involved with electronic publishing since 1991. She received an MS in MIS from UMSL in January 1995 and an undergraduate degree in Math and Russian from Washington University in 1984. ==================================================================== TUTORIAL: "Basics of HTML" by Mike Kriz HTML: What is it about? What does it look like? What can you do with it? Mike's tutorial will cover basic HTML components and the typical HTML document structure. ==================================================================== Meetings: ---------------------------------------------------------------- August 14, 6:30pm Main meeting Meeting location: Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester ---------------------------------------------------------------- August 20, 6:00pm Steering Committee Meeting location: Daugherty Systems One City Place (2nd floor) Creve Coeur, MO ---------------------------------------------------------------- Linux SIG August 15, 7:00pm: Java - What's all the excitement about? by Mark Volkmann of Object Computing, Inc. Java, a new object-oriented programming language, is being embraced by major operating system and software vendors as the vehicle for achieving these goals. Java is used to create both web-based (Internet or intranet) applications and "normal" applications. Java is an environment consisting of a toolset, class libraries, security mechanisms, and a virtual machine which provides platform independence. This presentation will provide an overview of the Java environment. Its benefits and features will be discussed. Issues such as security, speed, availability, future directions, and alternatives will also be presented. The speaker is Mark Volkmann, a consultant at Object Computing, Inc. (OCI). He teaches courses in Java and C++ for the OCI/CAIT program at Washington University. For more information or questions about Java, email him at .
