The speaker will tell you which UNIX commands and utilities he feels are important for users, system administrators, and programmers. There will be some tidbits from several utilities and a somewhat in depth discussion of the 'make' utility. Make is a very powerful, but not very well understood utility that is useful for more than just programmers. Questions and discussions are encouraged. Rich Seibel, is a consultant for Software Systems Specialists, Inc. Rich has been a part of the SLUUG since it's beginning. He has served as director and secretary. He has used UNIX for over 10 years. It has been his primary operation system for the last 3 years. He is a software developer for client server systems. He received a Doctor of Science in Applied Mathematics from Washington University in 1995. His first exposure to Linux was kernel 0.99pl15 with the sole purpose of TeX-ing his dissertation. Because Linux systems have a very favorable price/performance ratio, many engineers, scientists and mathematicians are using Linux as their primary research tool. A great variety of powerful mathematical tools are available for the Linux platform. Kevin will discuss the commercial and freeware software for symbolic algebra, statistics, numerical analysis, and simulation. Topic: Creator of the locally popular Post-Dispatch's "PostFax System" and President of Nuntius, Richard Shockey will address the basics of fax on demand as it relates to computer telephony, other high performance fax applications, and industry trends on the subject as well as the direction of the industry and how it will compete against the World Wide Web. A second guest is yet to be announced. Nuntius is a national fax on demand vendor that has its headquarters here in St. Louis. Nuntius's clients include the St. Louis Post- Dispatch "PostFax System", Siemens-Rolm, NCR, Internal Revenue Service, Omega Engineering among hundreds of others.
