Dynamic DNS with Chad A. Bersche

    Abstract:
So, now you have that high speed data line to your house and you're just itchin' to be able to telnet, ping or just otherwise have your machine named on the net. Well, if you're not up to registering your own domain name, don't care if it's something "cute" or not, Dynamic DNS may be what you're looking for. The Dynamic DNS will be examined, clients discussed, features outlined and gotchas pointed out.

    Biography:
Chad Bersche has done a number of presentations in the past.

    Presentation

Citrix server by "InfoLan" - with Russell (Russ) Smith

    Abstract:
InfoLAN of StL will speak on using CITRIX Systems' MetaFrame for UNIX application servers with WinFrame for Microsoft clients.

Deploy UNIX Systems Applications to Any Device, Over Any Connection with Citrix MetaFrame for UNIX Operating Systems.

With the continued popularity of the UNIX platform, organizations are anxious to provide broader access to UNIX and Java applications, from any device, without requiring an extra software tier or terminal emulation.

Citrix MetaFrame(tm) for UNIX Operating Systems delivers these applications to users anywhere, via any network connection or device-thin-client terminal to handheld. With MetaFrame application server software, users also gain the benefits of improved performance over low-bandwidth connections and tighter security. Further, when MetaFrame for Windows and MetaFrame for UNIX Operating Systems are used together, they can deliver virtually any application to any device.

Ideas about this discussion are welcome; please contact Russell (Russ) Smith at 314-966-5688 Fax 314-966-6890

    Sandbox

    by David Barnes

SLUUG members can experiment with web-related technologies on a new sandbox machine named Pilsner. The server is a Pentium 200 running the Linux 2.2.12 kernel.

The server is built with the following:

    --Apache 1.3.12
    --Perl 5.6 and mod_perl
--Tomcat and Cocoon from the Apache group. These products support Java servlets and XML processing.
--Qmail and ezmlm. Qmail is a secure, high-performance alternative to Sendmail. With EZMLM users can quickly and simply create and manage mailing lists.
--PHP 4.0. Embed the PHP scripting language into web pages for server-side processing.
    --MySQL Database.
    --Java 1.2

BSD Archives Available to Local Members

    by John Brooks

The St Louis BSD User Community http://www.stlbsd.org/ has provided to the SLUUG sandbox and SLUUG membership a BSD version archive on CDROM. Currently there are at least 6 versions of FreeBSD and OpenBSD in the archive for Intel, Alpha, Sparc, and others. Along with the CD's are some printed installation instructions from the Internet in a binder. The disks are available for use within the sandbox or a single set may be "checked out" and used offsite if you promise to return them within a couple weeks.

All SLUUG members are welcome to borrow any of the BSD versions on CD. That is why STLBSD put the BSD Version Archive together. It's on the honor system, we just ask that you get them back to the archive so that they will be available for other members.

The archive is stored at the SLUUG sandbox. If I recall correctly the archive has a jewel boxed set of OpenBSD2.6 and also a burned set of 2.7. There is also a binder with the "official" installation instructions printed from the Internet.

For more information members can contact John Brooks by sending mailto:john@stlbsd.orgfor details.

[on GNOME] ...The original plan was to aim to make a desktop as good as the Macintosh,
and we should not lower our ambition by making one merely as good as Windows.
    -- Richard Stallman

I'm not sure how this is done on an NT system, except that it involves a lot of clicking and rebooting.

Microsoft Faces Pressure to Respond Soon to Linux Operating System Threat http://linuxtoday.com/stories/6933.html

On what Micro$oft can do to respond to Linux OS Threat...

...They can make it illegal. This is already underway. There is a new bill, backed (of course) by Microsoft, making it illegal to reverse engineer software. This is already underway, see http://www.simnet.org/{issue:UCITA}.

Check it out if you want to be frightened. What happens when the programmers who wrote Samba are in court? What happens if anybody who writes anything like MS products are in court, with high-paid lawyers on the other side? Regardless of Anti-trust trial, anybody can sue anybody else at anytime and allege anything. And the damage doesn't come from winning or losing the suit, the damage comes from the expense of defending yourself. If you do anything based on what you read here, OPPOSE THIS. This is perhaps the KEY ISSUE to consider. If this gets passed, things get ALOT HARDER for open source.
