how searchable PDFs can be made of those documents, so your important papers
will become much more accessable. We will also show the Steve Jobs video
from the Bloomberg Game Changer Series. It is a fascinating look into the
man and the ideas behind the products we prefer to use.

How to Build an Online Brand
Thu, April 14, 12pm . 1pm 1234 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63103
This is the monthly mtng of the StL chapter of the Society of Professional Journalist but it has appeal for IT techies.
"How do you Build Your Online Brand?"
How do you make a name for yourself in these days of online overload, with journalists, bloggers, commenters and everyone else with access to the Internet competing for attention? Many successful "web-eneurs" have established a personal brand and, with the help of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, made their own name and their sites go-to destinations on the Web.
The St. Louis Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will look at how to set up, polish and market your personal brand, and the potential pitfalls of putting too much of yourself out there, at its next lunch gathering.
The lunch will feature:
Evan Benn, who in just a couple of years at the Post-Dispatch has made himself and his Hip Hops blog reliable and popular sources for all things hops-related across the region.
Angela Ortmann, who has used her stlwinegirl website and web identity to build up an event and consultation business. Earlier this year, the Riverfront Times honored her for Best Use of Facebook to Promote a Personal Brand in its Point & Clique awards.
Chad Garrison, writer and blog manager/editor at the Riverfront Times, and one of the judges of its Point & Clique awards, honoring the best use of the Web by local people and groups.
Scott Granneman, an expert on web security and adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis, teaching courses on technology, security, and the Internet. He also plans, develops and hosts websites.
The lunch is set for noon Thursday, April 14, at Lucas Park Grille, 1234 Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis. Cost (including soft drink and tip) is $10 for SPJ members and $12 for nonmembers.

Title: Clojure: Art of Abstraction
Presented By: Alex Miller (Revelytix)
About the Presentation:
Clojure is a new language that combines the power of Lisp with an existing hosted VM ecosystem (the Java VM). Clojure is a dynamically typed, functional, compiled language with performance on par with Java. At the heart of all programming lies the need for abstraction, be it abstraction over our data or abstraction over the processes that operate upon it. Clojure provides a core set of powerful abstractions and ways to compose them. These abstractions are based in a heritage of Lisp but also cover many aspects of object-oriented programming as well. This talk will examine these abstractions and introduce you to both Clojure and functional programming. Attendees are not expected to be familiar with either Clojure or FP.

However, the Razor scripting engine can also be hosted outside of its traditional context in ASP.NET MVC, and the DotNetNuke project has done just that. Incorporated into the newest versions of the open source framework, the Razor Host module allows a developer to utilize the power of the Razor scripting language to build DotNetNuke modules. This presentation will provide an introduction to Razor, the DNN host module, and demo a geolocation module that integrates with DotNetNuke's user profile to plot the location of a portal's users on a map." Important meeting logistics info! When you get to the 11th floor, please go to the main conference room. This month= For much of human history, plant extracts have been used as ingredients in potions and poisons. In the eastern Mediterranean, use of the latex of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) can be traced back at least to 1400 to 1200 B.C. The Sarpagandha root (Rauwolfia serpentina) has been used in India since approximately 1000 B.C.
Ancient people used medicinal plant extracts as purgatives, antitussives, sedatives, and treatments for a wide range of ailments, including snakebite, fever and insanity. As the use of medicinal plants spread westward across Arabia and Europe, new infusions and decoctions played a role in famous events. During his execution in 399 B.C., the philosopher Socrates drank an extract of coniine-containing hemlock (Conium maculatum). In the last century B.C., Queen Cleopatra used extracts of henbane (Hyoscyamus), which contains atropine, to dilate her pupils and appear more alluring to her male political rivals.
Today, 25% of our medicines still come either directly from plants or are modified plant chemicals and only 10% of plant species have been studied with respect to their chemical constituents!

This is the final month of our three month look at how we all handle project management. We've talked about how we go about managing projects, we've spoken about the applications we use and now we will go in depth about some of those applications. Several of us at the February meeting took on the challenge of using specific applications for 30 days. During the March meeting, we'll present and talk about those experiences. If you haven't attended the previous meetings, it's no problem! We would look forward to hearing about your ideas and experiences!

This month=
For much of human history, plant extracts have been used as ingredients in potions and poisons.
Today, 25% of our medicines still come either directly from plants or are modified plant chemicals and only 10% of plant species have been studied with respect to their chemical constituents!

the nature of the "social media"? Scott has consolidated these

A Daylight Comet Next September?
What Makes A Comet Bright?
by Dr. Joseph Marcus, M.D.
A new comet has been discovered that will pass between the Earth and the sun at the end of September 2011. If the right conditions develop, the comet could become bright enough to be seen during the daytime. But the brightness of new comets has been notoriously difficult to predict accurately. Dr. Marcus will explain what makes a comet shine and what factors determine how bright a comet will become. He will also discuss something about the composition of comets. He will explain how we can tell what a comet is made of, from a distance typically millions of miles away.

Really BIG Full Moon
Saturday, Mar 19, 2011
http://preview.tinyurl.com/6emlvlp
Biggest Full Moon in 19 Years Almost Certainly Won't Cause a Huge Natural Disaster.
On March 19th, the moon will be closer to Earth than it's been since 1992. The full moon that night will appear about 14 percent larger and significantly brighter than usual, but despite the brightness, the supermoon has a dark side. Supermoons have been linked to massive natural disasters in the past, from earthquakes to floods--but that connection is typically touted by astrologists. Astronomers and scientists, with typical drollness, say a catastrophe is unlikely.

Maplewood, MO 63143 Schlafly Bottleworks
We will discuss efforts to instrument the Antarctic ice sheets with seismographs and GPS receivers, to better understand the physics of ice flow and the feedbacks between ice sheets and the solid earth. These projects involve traveling to the remotest, coldest parts of the globe and designing instrumentation capable of unattended operation at temperatures down to -100°F. The surprising results thus far include the discovery that huge ice streams 60 miles wide lurch forward twice a day, and that the land surface in parts of Antarctica is rising as the ice melts.

-Linux as a Home Router: Part 2 VPN
Now that we have our linux box setup as our home router, lets see if we can't add some convenient VPN access. This way we can remote in to our home network (unfiltered network) when needed and operate securely for those "need to get out of the house" moments.
We'll primarily be looking at setting up OpenVPN SSL, however we might take a look at a few other quick solutions out there.

SNUG - Novell Users Grp and SuSE Linux Lunch - .NET on MONO in Linux
WhenWed, February 16, 11:30am . 12:45pm
Where9500 Manchester Rd, Rockhill, MO 63119 (map)
Description http://snug.sluug.org/
SNUG - StL Novell Users Grp and SuSE sig. A lunch time meeting about
SuSE Linux & other Novell sftwr, every 3rd Wednesday at Bandana's Bar-BQ
(corner of Rock Hill and Manchester Rds)
Seating is limited so please RSVP Gary Hollingsworth by
mailto:garyh@itinet.com This month: Running .NET applications on Linux
using Mono. Novell's open source MONO project enables applications
written for Microsoft's .NET to be run on Linux & *nix systems. Mono is
an implementation of the CLI and the .NET Base Class Library (BCL), and
provides additional functionality. The MONO project was started by
Ximian in 2001and turned out the working MONO 1.0 in 2004. Novell bought
Ximian and continued the development with the most recent release in
November 2010. The free and open source MONO project is led by Novell to
create an ECMA standard compliant .NET-compatible set of tools
including, among others, a C# compiler and a Common Language Runtime,
Moonlite (a Silverlite implimentation), F#, Visual Basic, Gtk#, ASP.NET,
ADO.NET.... The stated purpose of Mono is not only to be able to run
Microsoft .NET applications cross-platform, but also to bring better
development tools to Linux developers. Mono can be run on Android, BSD,
iOS, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and other Unix operating systems as well
as MS-Windows and some game console OSes such as the ones for the
PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360. Some feared that MS crated .NET to
force web developers into a "MS-only" existence but MONO allows the
"Open Standards world" to benefit from the .NET tools and existing apps
while crossing platforms.

Jeopardy Last Day of SuSE Linux vs human champions
WhenWed, February 16, 3:30pm . 4:00pm
WhereCh 4.1 KMOV (map)
DescriptionMonday thru Wed, an IBM computer running SuSE Linux will play
on TV's Jeopardy game show (3:30pm in St.L. Set your DVRs.) The computer
will take on all-time champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Unlike the
chess playing "Deep Blue", this computer, named "Watson" is off the
shelf hardware. It will use Natural Language Processing to understand
the english questions just like its human competitors. Watson will have
to decide its confidence in knowing the correct answer and decide if it
should "ring in" and take the points penalty if it guesses wrongly. PBS'
Nova did a special on it this week. (Check your listings for repeats.)
Miles O'Brien (the PBS reporter, not the Star Trek transporter chief)
lost to it during the show. title = "Smartest Machine on Earth." >
Watson is powered by 10 racks of IBM Power 750 servers, running SuSE
Linux. > It uses 15 terabytes of RAM and 2,880 processor cores. > > To
prepare for "Jeopardy!", it has been loaded with a > huge amount of >
information about books, movies, history, plays, music, > current
events, and the list goes on. > > For each question, Watson evaluates
information from > about 200 million > pages of content, or 1 million
books, McQueeney said. from
http://washingtontechnology.com/articles/2011/02/10/ibm-watson-data-uses.as…
For those who might prefer to watch online, it is viewable at
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/smartest-machine-on-earth.html Gary
wrote in his previous email that the system uses Natural Language
Processing (NLP) to parse human speech. Check out the presentation given
to our very own LUG on NLP by Kevin Scannell from the computer science
department of SLU at

2. You reach outside the mainstream to adopt the best of any community:
