= Libre-Office.
Mobile Cellphone technology.
Chroot jails
Sun "owned" the open-source project Open Office.
Oracle bought Sun. A number of contributors to Open Office
did not think Oracle was being adequately responsive to
the calls for improvements & progress.
So the "nice thing" about open-source is you can "take your ball
and go home". A group of developers have taken the Open Office
code and "forked off" a new code base called Libre-Office.
Will Oracle just give the Open Office name to Libre Office
and will it be the "gold standard"? Or will the fork be permanent
and Oracle maintain development of Open Office in another direction?
What's new and improved in Libre Office? Stan will tell
us his experinces of the last month de-installing Open Office
and installing Libre-Office.
Will Oracle just give the Open Office name to Libre Office
and will it be the "gold standard"? Or will the fork be permanent
and Oracle maintain development of Open Office in another direction?
And...another short presentation on Mobile Cellphone technology.
2G vs. 3G vs. 4G... Bigger is always better, right?
Maybe not. Maybe you really want to know if the frequencies
being used are the best for your terrain and buildings?
The tutorial on "Chroot jails" is a way of restricting root
access in a very scure way still getting access for what is needed.

St. L. chapter, Society of Professional Journalists
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange might not think governments have a right to keep secrets from their citizens, but the reality is that many government documents are not part of the public record. So, where is the line drawn between what the public and journalists have access to and what they don't? And is that line reasonable?
We'll ask three distinguished panelists to discuss those questions and others regarding government secrecy and public access at the next lunch meeting of the St. Louis Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
The panelists are:
Dennis Baker, special agent in charge of the FBI St.L Division. Jean Buchanan, Post-Dispatch assist. managing editor/projects.
Alan Howard, St. Louis University School of Law
professor and First Amendment expert.
The meeting will be noon until 1pm Thursday, Feb. 10, at Lucas Park Grille, 1234 Washington Avenue, downtown St. Louis. The cost, including lunch, soft drink, and tip, is $10 for SPJ members and $12 for other guests. 314-971-0073

Controlling Multiple Development Environments Using

9500 Manchester Rd, Rockhill, MO 63119
http://snug.sluug.org/
A lunch time meeting about SuSE Linux, every 3rd Wednesday at Bandana's Bar-BQ (corner of Rock Hill and Manchester Rds)
Seating is limited so please RSVP Gary Hollingsworth by mailto:garyh@itinet.com
ABSTRACT:
I will address configuring a set of machines for
development, including:
1) Using a VM as the development machine to avoid cluttering
the main workstation (which may be too small anyway).
2) Using Synergy to allow controlling the VM, the VM host, and
the workstation from the same keyboard.
3) Using DynDNS and reverse SSH to allow accessing the
VM from other locations.
DETAILS: Sometimes the software workbench requires more space and horsepower than is contained in a portable workstation. Also, some development tools have conflicting requirements, or cannot be installed in the developer's preferred environment. One solution is to use one or more virtual machines to host the development environments. If the VMs are running in a machine other than the primary workstation, the secondary workstation (VM host) can be controlled with the keyboard and pointer (mouse) of the primary workstation using Synergy, which allows quick switching among multiple displays from a single control point. Suggested configurations will also include use of reverse SSH connections to access a VM running on a remote host.

TOPIC: Winter White Lightning Talks!
Lightning Talks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_Talk) are typically between 5-10 minutes. The amount of time you will have will be determined by the number folks interested in giving talks. I'm pretty sure we have a gong too. Also talks do NOT have to be perl related. I'd love to see a good variety of topics! Fun is good too. :)

You're the type of developer who uses what works while keeping an eye out for a better way. 2. You reach outside the mainstream to adopt the best of any community: Open Source, Agile, Java, Ruby, etc. ,,,

Bill of Rights Day

Altho the weather is much better on July 4th, THIS day marks
what was really important in our country's origin.
As British Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher said in her speech
at St. Louis University about 10 years ago...
"What made America different...what made it great...was you
explicitly recognized these rights and put them in your Constitution."
(From memory...I should go back and check the wording.)

This Month:
Introduction to F#
Because we did not get to discuss F# in November, I have
moved the topic to the Dec meeting. We will be
covering core F# syntax, types, project organization,
parallel programming, and interop with C# projects.
I will use impressive words like "lambda", "closure",
"tail recursion", and "active pattern" to convince
everyone that I know what I am talking about. If there
is a particular F# feature you would like to know about,
please leave a comment on this page and I will do my
best to cover it in Dec.
Every month:
Developers should not align themselves with platforms
and languages, but with principles and ideas.
An "alternative" view of the Microsoft development
universe--a view that challenged the "Microsoft-only"
approach to software development. He distilled his
thoughts into four key developer characteristics which
form the basis of the ALT.NET philosophy:
1. You're the type of developer who uses what works
while keeping an eye out for a better way.
2. You reach outside the mainstream to adopt the best of
any community: Open Source, Agile, Java, Ruby, etc. ,,,

Most users don't ever realize just how much of a memory hog Perl is.
Being Perl, however, the language makes it easy to find out
using Devel::Peek and Devel::Size. This talk uses both to peer into
scalars, arrays, and hashes and shows some ways to reduce the
overhead when dealing with long-lived or high-volume applications.

_____Every month= Developers should not align themselves with platforms
and languages, but with principles and ideas. An "alternative" view
of the Microsoft development universe--a view that challenged the
"Microsoft-only" approach to software development.
He distilled his thoughts into four key developer characteristics
which form the basis of the ALT.NET philosophy:
1. You're the type of developer who uses what works while
keeping an eye out for a better way.
2. You reach outside the mainstream to adopt the best of any
community: Open Source, Agile, Java, Ruby, etc. ...
