Presentation "MPEG (and JPEG)" by Brian Quandt HEURIS/Pulitzer ==================================================================== PRESENTATION "MPEG -- short for: 500 channel digital video, direct broadcast satellite, interactive kiosks/training, and much more!" Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is the world's new standard for the coding of digital video and associated audio. Do not underestimate the importance of this standard. Karen Frenkel, in an article for the ACM, estimated that nearly one-half trillion dollars of business will result for the United States alone from the technologies involving High Definition Television--MPEG is one of the core technologies. This talk will cover the following topics: - How did MPEG come about? -- The world according to ISO. - Going from 27 megabytes/second to 150 kilobytes/second -- A brief technical overview. - Who's using MPEG, and for what? -- An industry overview. Brian Quandt has been working in and around the world of MPEG for several years. As President of HEURIS/Pulitzer, a joint venture between HEURIS Logic and Pulitzer Broadcasting, he has been responsible for designing and implementing the MPEG encoding system used for their video compression services. He is a contributing member to many of the ISO groups responsible for the MPEG specification including: ISO-IEC/JTC1/SC29/WG11 and WG1 as well as X3L3 2.1, .2 and .3. In particular, Mr. Quandt wrote significant portions of part 5 of the MPEG-1 specification which regards the software implementation of system encoding. Brian Quandt is also a member of many other important telecommunications, multimedia, and computer organizations including the ACM, IMA and SMPTE. Mr. Quandt is often sought as an expert on the MPEG algorithm. He has written a chapter for a major college text book on multimedia, and presented a paper on the parallelization of the MPEG algorithm, at SMPTE's annual national meeting and exposition in October 1994. In addition, Mr. Quandt gave a brief paper on MPEG and served on a panel at COMDEX--Fall 1994. ==================================================================== TUTORIAL "Using the shell to customize your UNIX environment," by Mike Kriz. ==================================================================== Meetings: ---------------------------------------------------------------- January 10, 6:30pm Main meeting Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester ---------------------------------------------------------------- January 16, 6:00pm Steering Committee The Steering Committee meets the Tuesday following the general 2nd Wednesday meeting at 6:00 PM in the 2nd floor training room of Daugherty Systems, located at One City Place in Creve Coeur.
