Presentation "Frameworks - Business Driven Systems Integration," by Malcolm Spence, Digital Equipment Corp. and the Object Management Group ==================================================================== PRESENTATION: "Frameworks - Business Driven Systems Integration" by Malcolm Spence, Digital Equipment Corporation and the Object Management Group Object Frameworks based on the Object Management Group's (OMG) Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) are rapidly becoming the way to connect applications that were not designed to work together. This session will talk about how a Framework-Based Environment (FBE) utilising ObjectBroker (CORBA) can be used to build true three-tier client/server systems. Other integration mechanisms will be compared and contrasted, and an implementation of CORBA described. How to get started building object systems and how to wrap applications in order to make them object ready and provide services to thin clients will be covered. An object framework can be used to bridge the generation (and semantics) gap of systems. It provides an incremental way to approach object technology and appreciate its benefits. It does so by first enabling a company to characterise its existing base as object services. A walk-through of how to assess your current status, define the business problem, choose an appropriate object model, and begin working with distributed objects will be presented. The role of the business manager, IT manager, the modeler and programmer will be discussed in the context of defining the framework development environment. Malcolm is Asia Pacific market development manager with the Applied Objects Group. He came to work at Digital fifteen years ago after nineteen years in the Aerospace Industry in the U.K. and U.S. He has spent five years in sales and ten years in marketing where he represented Digital on the boards of industry and government standards initiatives. Malcolm's presentation to SLUUG was coordinated through the Object Management Group. ==================================================================== TUTORIAL: "Introduction To Object Oriented Technology" by Malcolm Spence, Digital Equipment Corporation and the Object Management Group This tutorial is designed to introduce attendees to the basic concepts of object orientation and enable them to appreciate the significance of this paradigm for building systems. The session will cover the fundamental structure of objects, encapsulation, inheritance, operations, methods, and other aspects that make object oriented technology different from the procedural style of programming or designing systems. How objects can be distributed using the Object Management Group's (OMG) Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), so as to create true client/server systems will be discussed, as well as the issues of reuse and the differing levels at which reuse can be achieved. Some aspects of object modeling will be presented to show how they are richer than their data model counterparts. We will depart from our usual half-hour tutorial format this month; this session will last approximately 60 minutes. ==================================================================== Meetings: ---------------------------------------------------------------- September 11, 6:30pm Main meeting Meeting location: Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester ---------------------------------------------------------------- September 17, 6:00pm Steering Committee Meeting location: Daugherty Systems One City Place (2nd floor) Creve Coeur, MO ---------------------------------------------------------------- Linux SIG September 19, 7:00pm: September Double Header Using `pppd' to connect to the SLUUG BBS by Rich Seibel, Software Systems Specialists Loadable Kernel Modules by Matthew Feldt, Linux SIG Chair Meeting Location: Bridgeton Trails Public Library 3455 McKelvey Road St. Louis, MO 63044 ---------------------------------------------------------------- CTI SIG September 4, 6:30pm: Software Quality Assurance by Robert Becnel Meeting Location: Bridgeton Trails Public Library 3455 McKelvey Road St. Louis, MO 63044 ==================================================================== The STL!/unix/usr/group meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month at Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester Blvd, just east of Hanley on Manchester. The only authorized news service for SLUUG is cerberus.wustl.edu. Michelob uses this service. Those who access news directly via a PPP connection will have to point to cerberus on their system. The use of any other Washington University news service is unauthorized for SLUUG users. If you are using any other service, please change immediately. If you have questions, call Rich Seibel at (314)878-0394 or email rich@michelob.wustl.edu. ==================================================================== St. Louis Unix Users Group - Linux SIG (SLUUGLS) PRESENTATIONS: Using `pppd' & `chat' to connect to the SLUUG BBS -- Rich Seibel Rich Seibel, a consultant for Software Systems Specialists Inc., will describe the process of connecting to the SLUUG BBS using Linux `pppd' and `chat'. Rich has been a part of SLUUG since it's beginning and has served as director and secretary. Rich installed his first copy of Linux two years ago and has been addicted since. The SLUUG BBS is a PPP connection to the Internet for $50/year available to all members of SLUUG or the Linux SIG. Membership in SLUUG or the Linux SIG is achieved by merely attending 2 meetings within a calendar year at either users group. Loadable Kernel Modules -- Matthew Feldt Making their first appearance in a production kernel (kernel 2.0), loadable kernel modules allow you to compile support for all devices while only loading the ones you use. This functionality is especially appealing to developers who would like to load/unload kernel drivers as they develop them. The rest of us benefit by having a smaller `resident' kernel, which takes up less memory, and modules that can be loaded/unloaded as required. A daemon process `kerneld' can even dynamically load/unload the modules as required making the device drivers `appear' to be compiled in. An introduction to functionality of loadable kernel modules will be presented along with steps to migrate your Linux system to the 2.0 kernel and loadable modules. LOCATION DIRECTIONS: Bridgeton Trails Public Library Room 3455 McKelvey Road >From 270: Exit St. Charles Rock Road east, make right onto McKelvey Road, Library is on the right (west) hand side of McKelvey. >From Lindberg: Exit St. Charles Rock Road west, make left onto McKelvey Road, Library is on the right (west) hand side of McKelvey. The discussion will focus on the process of Software Quality Assurance in the Computer Telephony field. Software engineering, testing procedures and tools, and other CTI software resources will be presented. Audience participation in case studies will be the primary focus in this discussion. The speaker will be Robert Becnel. Date/Time: September 4, 1996; 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM (approx) Location: Bridgeton Trails Library - 3455 McKelvey Road St. Louis, MO (one block south of St. Charles Rock Road) For more information on SLUUG CiTI contact Tony Zafiropoulos at or (314)537-3959. ==================================================================== Special Interest Groups As our membership grows, we have had some inquiries about the possibility of having Special Interest Groups in several areas.
