Mark Freiberger of Edward Jones will discuss SNMP. Brian Bearden of Southwestern Bell will talk about CMIS/CMIP. The CMIS/CMIP presentation will include a brief overview of the OSI communication stack and the CMIP protocol. Brian will also describe ITU-T's Telecommunications Management Network architecture which uses these tools to define a standard systems management environment for telecommunications companies. Brian will conclude with his opinions on the future of OSI communications and CMIP. Brian Bearden is a systems analyst for Southwestern Bell Telephone. He has been developing inter-company systems management applications for the last four years. These applications use the Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) over the OSI communications stack. Brian also serves on the ANSI accredited standards committe, T1M1.5, which defines North American standards for CMIP interfaces between telecommunications companies. ==================================================================== TUTORIAL: "Suggestions for Effective Monitoring - a Practical Approach" by Mike Kriz Everyone agrees a proactive approach to life is better than a reactive one. So how do you apply that approach to application and system management? I will outline some methods to use to determine where your oportunities are and how to be more effective in exploiting them. Areas covered will include: o What do you look for? o When do you look for it? o How do you make it easier to design your test points in? o Do you try to fix it "automagic-ly?" o What historical information do you keep? o Whom do you notify about it? o When do you notify them? o How do you determine when you need to change your monitoring? ==================================================================== Meetings: ---------------------------------------------------------------- October 9, 6:30pm Main meeting Meeting location: Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester ---------------------------------------------------------------- October 15, 6:00pm Steering Committee Meeting location: Daugherty Systems One City Place (2nd floor) Creve Coeur, MO ---------------------------------------------------------------- Linux SIG October 17, 7:00pm: Network Management by G.
