Presentation "Creating, Deploying, and Managing Distributed Objects for the Enterprise," by Don Griffing, Borland International ==================================================================== PRESENTATION: "Creating, Deploying, and Managing Distributed Objects for the Enterprise," by Don Griffing, Borland International As client/server development was the rage for the early 1990s, object-oriented development is for the rest of the 1990s and beyond. There are two major impediments for most organizations to embrace this technology. The first is the skill set of the current development staff. The second is the investment in legacy systems/data, which could include client/server applications. This presentation will examine three architectural technologies which are available today that will support object-oriented development. These technologies are based on industry standards. The discussion of these technologies will include identifying the major vendors with their strengths and weaknesses. Presenter: Donald Griffing is a System Engineer with Borland International. He came to Borland after 15 years as a software developer, where projects ranged from data collection and reporting using relational databases, to image processing, to embedded systems. Donald is an adjunct faculty member at the St. Paul Technical College and the University of St. Thomas, both in St. Paul, MN. ==================================================================== TUTORIAL: "Java for C/C++ Programmers," by Don Griffing, Borland International Java is a platform-independent language that opens new opportunities for creating applications for the enterprise. This tutorial is an overview of the language and its features. In addition, it will include a demonstration of a tool that can decrease the time to create Java applications. ==================================================================== Meetings: ---------------------------------------------------------------- November 13, 6:30pm Main meeting Meeting location: Sunnen Products, 7910 Manchester ---------------------------------------------------------------- November 19, 6:00pm Steering Committee Meeting location: Daugherty Systems One City Place (2nd floor) Creve Coeur, MO ---------------------------------------------------------------- Linux SIG November 21, 7:00pm: Disk Drives 101 by John W. Himpel got his first computer job programming a GE615 mainframe in 1969. The attatched peripherals included a paper tape reader/punch, card reader, 200 lines/minute printer, 200MB disk, 7-track tape drives and 256KB Core (real Core). John has programmed the IBM 1401, IBM 7090, Honeywell 2020 and too many Honeywell and Bull mainframes to remember. John has held positions as programmer, systems analyst, project leader, database administrator, manager and Vice-President during his 22 years at A.G. Edwards & Sons. John's first Unix machine was a 2MB Fortune 32/16, using a mixture of System III and System 7 with only a 40MB disk. John then graduated to Microport System V on an Intel 80286. At last count, John has been responsible for machines representing 14 different versions of UNIX on 12 different architectures. John is currently retired and enjoying traveling overseas with his wife. John's presentation will cover: Available Disk Options Floppy Hard Disk - IDE vs SCSI Removable Disk - ZIP, Jazz, Syquest...
