WHEN YOU ENTER THIS ONLINE SESSION:
Your best experience might be with a Chromium based web browser.
You will be muted on entry, so join early if you want to test your
camera or microphone. Use V on keyboard to toggle your camera. Use M
on keyboard to toggle (mute or unmute) your audio.

IMPORTANT TO US:
Set your identity to show first name and last name. Instead of full
last name you could just follow first name with an initial.
Going into the chat room may allow you to set your name there. Or,
at three vertical dots (more actions) in lower right hand corner,
select Settings, then under Profile "Set your display name"
(you can ignore the "Set your gravatar email block").
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
ORDER OF EVENTS:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
TOPICS:
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user in the meeting may select the topics.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share the knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving and effective techniques.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use. However, it has many benefits.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions.

Last Aug 17 was the 5th anniv of IBM starting LinuxOne.
We'd hoped to have a talk and we're finally getting it.
It's a story of:
• private server hrdwr & "The Cloud",
• of making it an "Open Src ecosystem" ,
• a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project.
• The Open Mainframe Project
with player such as:
• SUSE
• CA Technologies (now Broadcom)
• Canonical / Ubuntu
If your wondering what those terms mean & their interactions... come to the talk,

AUG 17, '20
On this day five years ago (i.e. 2015) IBM launched LinuxONE, a new family of
mission-critical Linux-only servers. In this blog, we plan to give you a behind the
curtain view of how IBM brings to market a new product, discuss some highlights
from the past five years, and finally share insight into where we see the
next five years going for this platform. Bryan Foley and Steven Dickens, the original
IBM Offering Managers who were involved in the launch, share their own retrospective
of the 5-year journey of LinuxONE.
Enterprise Linux
IBM has had a long-standing history of supporting the open-source community,
including Linux. It was obvious in late 2014 that Linux had won the operating system wars
and had become the most pervasive operating system, especially as the cloud evolved.
Enterprises saw increasing use of Linux but were also concerned with deploying more
mission-critical workloads on x86 systems. A small team of us in late 2014 and early 2015
looked at how we could bring the best capabilities IBM had available in the Systems portfolio
and combine these with Linux and the open-source ecosystem in a package that could gain
mass-market adoption.
... ... ...
The IBM team felt they needed to embrace the Open Source community and make LinuxONE
more than just an IBM product push. So, in conjunction with the launch of LinuxONE, IBM
decided to add more to the launch. While there was a community around Linux on this
chip architecture it was fragmented and disparate. Working collaboratively with the
Linux Foundation and an early band of partners the community embarked on forming a
Linux Foundation Collaborative Project. In a matter of weeks, this effort was bootstrapped,
and the Open Mainframe Project was launched with 14 founding members including players
such as SUSE and what was CA Technologies (now Broadcom). The Open Mainframe Project
has grown and gone from strength to strength. The Project is hosting its inaugural event this
year in September, details of which can be found here.
Launch Day – August 17th 2015 – LinuxCon Seattle
... ... ...
Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, joined Ross to announce that Ubuntu would be
supporting this new platform which was a first for this chip architecture.
... ... ...
...especially the extreme security, and has built a robust portfolio of offerings as part of
the IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Services. This allows clients to quickly spin up virtual servers,
databases, or cryptography key management services in the cloud that take advantage of
this level of security. To find out more about Hyper Protect click here.

by James Conroy
Tired of your static aliases only doing the one thing?
Want to add some flow control to your shell, so that it changes behavior depending on the time of
day, day of the week, or OS of that server you're about to ssh into?
This tutorial will give you the what, why, and how of BASH functions.
Plus, how to find and 'fix' the functions the last 'sysadmin' left behind.

~7PM~7:15PM
Announcements & general Q&A about *NIX, Open Src, Open Standards, IT tech, tech in StL,...
Should last about 15~20 mins.

COSI, the Common Operating System Interface
by Steven Borrelli
This talk introduces COSI, the Common Operating System Interface, which defines an API for
the configuration of container operating systems.
While there has been innovation in the development of minimal Linux distributions for running
Kubernetes, the distributions diverge from each other in terms of management and API endpoints.
Similar to other projects such as the Container Network Interface (CNI) , COSI has a focus on
the configuration of the underlying (Linux) OS, providing Protocol Buffer definitions and a
gRPC API reference implementation for configuration settings such as DNS, network, and kernel
settings. By utilizing a flexible plugin system, multiple backend implementations can provide a
consistent API to consumers.
In this talk we’ll review the configuration and APIs of popular container operating systems and
Kubelet-node interactions. We will then review the COSI API, the plugin architecture, and demo
node management using backend plugins written in Go and Rust.
For folks who want more information, here is a google doc that describes the motivation:

"Container-oriented Linux distros” mentioned include:
• Flatcar Linux
• Talos Linux
• Bottlerocket OS
• k3O
