The Saint Louis, Missouri (MO), Newcomer Linux Users Group (NEWLUG)
meets the fourth Tuesday each month (on third Tuesday in December).
These are free (no $$$), open, public meetings where face-to-face
assistance and time with Linux installation is known to be available.
This is a Linux Users Group for the newcomer with one-on one help
for anyone curious about or new to Linux.
Discussion topics covered are whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user in the room may select the topic.
We frequently have a volunteer or two that will meet the effort and
provide installation assistance during this time.
The next NEWLUG meeting is tomorrow:
2019-06-25 ~ 6:00 - 9:00 PM
> https://newlug.sluug.org/
Otherwise, our next public meeting where face-to-face assistance and
time with Linux installation is known to be frequently available is
with the monthly Saint Louis Area Computer Club (SLACC) when we hold
our regular Linux Configuration Workshop.
The next SLACC meeting will be:
2019-07-11 ~ 6:00 - 9:00 PM
> https://slacc.sluug.org/
Additional helpful guidance about installing Linux begins with information
in our handout:
Technical information about your computer before hand would be helpful,
so that we know what to expect. Make, model, CPU, RAM, hard drive capacity,
CD/DVD/USB ports, etc.
If these dates and times can't help, maybe we can come up with a better
time and find someone close to you. We know a number of folks that will
independently assist Linux installation at no $$$ cost. Some of our
senior members are very flexible time wise.

Carolyn Peters of MasterCard presents "Intro to Bash Scripting (and how to exit vim)". Bash is a language in it's own right, but one you've probably also used interactively from the command line. Carolyn introduces us to the control structures of Bash.

MAIN
Stan Reichardt will lead our discussion.
Its the 6th anniv of the first release of Veracrypt.
VeraCrypt is a source-available freeware utility used for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE).[5] It can create a virtual encrypted disk within a file or encrypt a partition[6] or (in MS-Windows) the entire storage device with pre-boot authentication.[7]
VeraCrypt is a fork of the discontinued TrueCrypt project.[8] It was initially released on 22 June 2013 and has produced its latest release (version 1.23) on 12 September 2018.[9] Many security improvements have been implemented and issues raised by TrueCrypt code audits have been fixed. VeraCrypt includes optimized implementations of cryptographic hash functions and ciphers which boost performance on modern CPUs.
(Our original presentation on "Programmable Gate Arrays vs ASICS vs RealTime Linux" will be presented on a later date due to a work schedule conflict.)
VENUE Graybar Electric Co., Inc.
11885 Lackland Road, Maryland Heights, MO 63146
Meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 6:30PM to 9:00PM.
==============================================
SLUUG is your forum for exchanging information about OPEN standards, OPEN systems, OPEN source, products, services and architectures.
We usually start the general meeting with a basic session, which may include either simple tutorials, displays of newly discovered web sites, command line wonders, demonstrations of useful applications, amazing graphical packages, major resolution of long standing anomalies, blinking lights, or quantum shifts in both time and space. Then we will have our usually quick welcome, introduction, administrative announcements, and a Call For Help - Questions and Answers Period. After all that, we take a break before our main event.

Craig Buchek will give a talk on "How to Conference". A lot of us techies are introverts. But that shouldn't
stop us from getting the most out of the conferences we attend. Conferences provide value in 2 main areas —
the content and the networking opportunities. In this presentation, you'll learn strategies, tactics, and tips
for getting better at networking and getting more from your conference experience.
(Extroverts are welcome as well!)
We will be meeting at T-Rex in the Holekamp Classroom.

Craig will bring sandwiches (please let him know if you have any special dietary needs). Please bring your own
beverages.

Linux Configuration Workshop
St. Louis County Library, Thornhill Branch,
Meeting Room 2 (TH)
12863 Willowyck Drive,
St. Louis, MO 63146
The Saint Louis Area Computer Club (SLACC) is the oldest, longest enduring, continuously meeting personal
computer organization active in Greater St. Louis Metro Area.
We often hold a Linux Configuration Workshop when nothing else more interesting comes up, or when there is no
other event or activity scheduled.
Linux is an Internet capable Networking Operating System that provides many fully functional applications that
perform well on both older and new computers. Most Linux distributions are free or low cost and provides an
extremely reliable and cost effective alternative to high priced proprietary software.
The workshop is where we usually examine, fix, repair, and troubleshoot, difficult hardware and software
configuration problems for Linux newcomers. Problems with other operating systems and hardware are also
frequently fixed. We have full connectivity to the Internet on site and know how to use it.
Bring your laptop or desktop PC to our hands on workshop to troubleshoot your Linux installation, network
connection or X Window GUI configuration problem. Just remember to bring your laptop and power strip or your
desktop PC with monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables, cords, power strips and two discs or a flash thumb drive.
For newcomers, we can evaluate your hardware and current Operating System setup. If we determine there is
sufficient time, we can perform a complete functioning Linux installation.
