JOINING THIS ONLINE SESSION:
6:00pm Begin testing of controls, hearing, screen sharing and speaking
with the following site:
During this half hour period, others may be able to help you.
Joining without ear buds, earphones or headset may result in a feedback
loop with a builtin laptop microphone. Using at-least earbuds is highly
recommended. Using Ethernet is better than WiFi connectivity.
**** USE OF ICEWEASLE, SAFARI or FIREFOX BROWSER NOT RECOMMENDED ****
Joining our session using any Firefox based browser is NOT recommended.
Previously known Firefox compatibility bugs caused problems for others
already in Jitsi sessions. You might not have problems; but, your use
of Firefox would cause others to have problems.
**** USE OF ICEWEASLE, SAFARI or FIREFOX BROWSER NOT RECOMMENDED ****
If you do not make the effort and take the time to get your connection
working correctly, you may be very disruptive. Try dropping your
connection and rejoin. That sometimes fixes issues. But, do so slowly,
as granting access to your microphone and camera too quickly is the
current main problem. Also, there are often sound settings in different
browsers that may need to be changed.

WHEN YOU ENTER THIS ONLINE SESSION:
Do NOT remain showing as Fellow Jitster. Set your identity to show
first name and last name. We do prefer that you use your full last
name. Instead of full last name you could just follow first name with
an initial.
Going into the chat room may allow you to set your name there. Or, at
three vertical dots (more actions) in lower right hand corner, select
Settings, then under Profile "Set your display name" (you can ignore
the "Set your gravatar email block").
Meeting will be recorded for attendance tracking and quality control.

START OF MEETING:
6:30pm The meeting starts.
Assistance with controls, hearing, screen sharing and speaking ends.
Anybody joining after 6:30pm that experiences issues with controls,
hearing, screen sharing or speaking should only use chat room to ask
questions or make comments.
Annoying disruptions may cause you to be kicked off the session.
You might be muted on entry, so join early if you want to test your
camera or microphone. Use letter V on keyboard to toggle your camera.
Use letter M on keyboard to toggle (mute or unmute) your audio. You do
not need a camera, nor microphone to watch and listen with your browser.
All might be muted at this point. You may have to unmute yourself
in order to speak. You can ask questions and make comments in chat room.

ORDER OF EVENTS:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
TOPICS:
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user at the meeting may select general and specific topics.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share our knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving, techniques and troubleshooting.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use. However, it has many benefits.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions.

TOPIC: SuSE Liberty, Rancher, and Harvester
By Michael Carrington
What's New, and more!
CentOS was one of the most acclaimed distros for servers, and one that
many companies adopted, a binary fork of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux)
from Red Hat (now owned by IBM), maintained by the community and free.
But nevertheless, in an unexpected turn (by RedHat), everything was
turned upside down, leaving a large gap that is now to be filled.
(The CentOS that we knew is no more.) Liberty Linux from SuSE, is
another of the alternatives that join projects like AlmaLinux, Rocky
Linux, etc., etc.
SuSE Liberty Linux as a "replacement" for CentOS.
SuSE Liberty Linux is a product that is being developed by SuSE with its
own Open Build Service tool, from the binary packages Official Red Hat
RPMs (SRPMs). In the case of the kernel, the RHEL kernel will not be
used, rather it is based on the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)
kernel, but compiled using a configuration to maintain compatibility
for RHEL/CentOS.
SuSE Rancher is a container management platform that provides full
management of all your Kubernetes distributions, whether you're managing
one or one ... SuSE Rancher addresses the needs of DevOps teams deploying
apps.
SuSE Rancher differs from Kubernetes:
a) Kubernetes is a technology for managing containers organized under
a cluster of virtual or physical machines.
b) Rancher is a technology for managing Kubernetes clusters en masse.
SuSE Harvester is an Open, interoperable hyperconverged infrastructure
(HCI).
Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) doesn't need to be expensive or
complex and with Harvester it's not. Harvester presents organizations
with a modern HCI solution that is feature-full and purpose built for
cloud-native environments. Consolidate your virtual machine workloads
and Kubernetes clusters with Harvester.
Designed by the SuSE Rancher engineering team, Harvester is built on
Kubernetes and utilizes the latest cloud-native solutions.
Harvester has two modes of operation:
1. HCI, where it can attach to another cluster as a VM hosting node or
2. a Helm application deployed into an existing Kubernetes cluster.

We hold an annual meeting during February as required by our charter
and provide ballots for electing our board and recommending officers.
The Saint Louis Unix Users Group (SLUUG) is an IRS 501c(6) designated
not-for-profit professional association dedicated to education and
communication among computer users. SLUUG members include many Linux
and UNIX professionals, Networking experts, System experts, hobbyists,

Systems, Linux, BSD and other Free Open Source Software (FOSS)
applications, products, projects and services.
The SLUUG annual meeting will start remotely 6:30 PM (CST) 9 February.
We highly recommend any issues be discussed prior and coordinated with
the Steering Committee members in advance to expedite consideration.
SLUUG advertises, advises, aids, announces, assists, promotes, sponsors,
and otherwise provides support to Unix related; yet independent,
associated local groups. We provide mailing list access, and web site
presence. We arrange for remote meeting sessions, physical meeting
places and pay meeting room fees at county libraries.

These informally associated groups are considered to be associated as
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) of SLUUG. They have important indirect
interest in the Board membership, which chooses to aid, promote and
support them now and in the future.
Attendance at any SLUUG sponsored meetings, and all of these associated
meetings and remote sessions is considered to count toward voting
eligibility. Displaying your name during the remote sessions enabled
your attendance to be recorded. If you attended any two meetings or
sessions during the last calendar year, you may vote by absentee ballot.

2 GREAT TALKS this month!! Please spread the word!
Bob Netherton used to be a frequently loved speaker from Sun Microsystems
but we haven’t heard from him for years! This Wed, now an Oracle employee he will tell us what he and the
other developers of the Solaris OS have been up to.
Before that, Ed Howland will expose those hidden .Dot files in the basic/tutorial. .Dot files are frequently used
for configuration files, logs, system stuff,… that the less techie-user would not find interesting…usually…but
sometimes you need to get to them!!
Wed 9 Feb 2022 6:30 (“Doors” open ~6pm to make sure your mic & video work.)
==========================================================
BASE/tutorial: .Dot Files by Ed Howland
Per Wikipedia... "Dot file" redirects to the topic Hidden file and hidden directory
• What are dotfiles? If, as you say, they are invisible, then how do I view them?
• Why to dotfiles exist? Where did they originally come from? What are they used for?
• Why are they splattered all over my clean pristine home directory and other folders?
• Is there some strategy for managing them well?
All these questions and perhaps many more will be attempted to be answered by this talk. If you have any expertise on managing dotfiles, please email your comments, ideas, suggestions, or tips to Ed by mailto:ed.howland@gmail.com before this meeting, and they will be credited to yourself there.

MAIN: What's New in Solaris 11.4! by Bob Netherton of Oracle Corp
What's New in Solaris 11.4
Serving customers into 2031 and beyond
Paraphrasing Mark Twain a bit, rumors of the demise of Solaris have been greatly exaggerated. For many of our customers, SPARC and Solaris continue to be critical technologies and this talk will be focused on how Oracle has supported and will continue to support those customers into the next decade. This will be a technical discussion covering:
1. Solaris Support Repository Updates (SRUs) - what they are and why they matter
2. New features in ZFS, including vdev device removal (has it really been 16 years)
3. Solaris Analytics for fans of Grafana (Solaris Web Dashboard) and Prometheus (Solaris Stat Store)
4. Platform support
5. Security and Compliance Reporting tools
6. Solaris in the Oracle Cloud
