One on one help for anyone curious about or new to Linux. All
meetings are free and open to the public.
TOPICS?
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user in the room may select the topic.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share the knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving and effective techniques.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions.
Order of Events:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.
Users that bring their laptops (or even desktops) often connect to the
Internet for application installation and bookmarking of interesting web
sites. Early arrival may provide enough time to assist installation,
configuration and demonstration of Linux on hardware. The library will
not provide us with monitors, keyboards, power strips or computer mice.
Come early, come often!

We will be moving away from meeting at Graybar!
We need need a replacement venue.
This ONLY effects our second (2nd) Wednesday of the month general meetings!!!
We are asking for your suggestions on possible new locations. Perhaps your
employer or one you could recommend.
Perhaps a restaurant with a quiet room available.
We want to keep the second (2nd) Wednesday but MIGHT consider moving to
a different Wednesday.
We need help finding a replacement venue with:
1. Similar location, relatively near intersection of Page and I-270.
2. Ample free parking.
3. After business hours entrance access (6pm to 9pm).
4. Seating for not less than 20 attendees (more desired).
5. Wi-Fi Internet access.
6. Projector capabilities with sound.
This only effects our General meetings on the second (2nd) Wednesday of each
month. Our other sponsored monthly meetings will not be changed.
Hosting sponsorship by Graybar Electric Inc. of our SLUUG General meetings
comes to an end after this month (September 2019). We appreciate their
sponsorship for approximately the last 18 years. Alas, good things often
come to an end and we now need to find a new location.

TOPIC: Nix and NixOS by Sam Hatfield
Configure an OS with a package manager?! How??
NixOS is a linux distro with a unique repository and dependency features. In this talk, Sam will discuss Nix, the functional package manager used in NixOS. We will focus on Nix's unique aproach to package management, and how that completely changes how we can manage operating systems.
BIO: Sam Hatfield is a software developer living in St. Louis. For the last five years he’s worked in a diverse set of domains including DevOps and Fullstack Web Development. He recently started a freelancing business, too!
Distrowatch says:
NixOS is an independently developed GNU/Linux distribution that aims to improve the state of the art in system configuration management.
In NixOS, the entire operating system, including the kernel, applications, system packages and configuration files, are built by the Nix package manager. Nix stores all packages in isolation from each other; as a result there are no /bin, /sbin, /lib or /usr directories and all packages are kept in /nix/store instead.
Other innovative features of NixOS include:
reliable upgrades,
rollbacks,
reproducible system configurations,
source-based model with binaries, and
multi-user package management.
Although NixOS started as a research project, it is now a functional and usable operating system that includes hardware detection, KDE as the default desktop, and systemd for managing system services.

BASE: Using a Tiling Windows Manager
by James Conroy
In computing, a tiling window manager is a window manager with an organization of the screen into mutually
non-overlapping frames, as opposed to the more popular approach of coordinate-based stacking of overlapping
objects that tries to fully emulate the desktop metaphor.
This session might show factors common with both personal and enterprise computing.
MAIN: Visual Studio Code
Installing, Configuring, and Using
by Scott Granneman
Visual Studio Code is a free, open source editor for coding in almost any language you can think of, and it
runs on all major platforms. It's really good, and is improving rapidly every month. In fact, it is now the #1
developers editor according to the Stack Overflow 2019 Developer Survey. In this talk I'll cover installation,
how VSCode works, the interface, key features, extensions that Web developers in particular might want, and
configuration, including keyboard shortcuts.
18:00 -- 21:00 SLACC ~ St. Louis Area Computer Club

Linux Configuration Workshop
** *Bring a computer and Install Linux* **
St. Louis County Library, Thornhill Branch,
12863 Willowyck Drive,
St. Louis, MO 63146
The Saint Louis Area Computer Club (SLACC) is the oldest, longest enduring, continuously meeting personal
computer organization active in Greater St. Louis Metro Area.
We often hold a Linux Configuration Workshop when nothing else more interesting comes up, or when there is no
other event or activity scheduled.
Linux is an Internet capable Networking Operating System that provides many fully functional applications that
perform well on both older and new computers. Most Linux distributions are free or low cost and provides an
extremely reliable and cost effective alternative to high priced proprietary software.
The workshop is where we usually examine, fix, repair, and troubleshoot difficult hardware and software
configuration problems for Linux newcomers. Problems with other operating systems and hardware are also
frequently fixed. We have full connectivity to the Internet on site and know how to use it.
Bring your laptop or desktop PC to our hands on workshop to troubleshoot your Linux installation, network
connection or X Window GUI configuration problem. Just remember to bring your laptop and power strip or your
desktop PC with monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables, cords, power strips and two discs or a flash thumb drive.
For newcomers, we can evaluate your hardware and current Operating System setup. If we determine there is
sufficient time, we can perform a complete functioning Linux installation.
