Topic: 50 Years in Technology: Nothing as Constant as
Change! Statistics show that for most entrepreneurs, success is
fleeting.
That is particularly true in technology-focused businesses where
risk is inherently high, the pace of evolution rapid and
the need for innovation constant. ...

CONFIRMED -They ARE meeting DESPITE the World Series!
This month= Core Animation Fun House
Animation is “core” to every iOS app. This talk dives into
the Core Animation framework.
We will discuss the different types of CALayer objects, implicit and
explicit animations, and a technique for
animating sine waves and arcs.
* Layers, Geometery and Layer Trees
* Implicit Animations (size, position, color, etc.)
* Explicit Animations (continuous animations, path animations, etc.)
* Animating with the UIKit API * Multi-touch Bézier curve editor
(with path animation)
* Technique for animating sine waves and arcs (think pie charts).
* Technique for creating reflections using CAReplicatorLayer
* 6:00pm - Meet/Greet
* 6:15pm - Core Animation Fun House by Brian Coyner
* 8:30pm - Next Meeting Details, Questions / Discussions
VENUE: St. Louis County Library Headquarters (40 & Lindbergh).
We are a group of software developers dedicated to diving deep into
Apple’s iOS platform.
Our goal is take our current software engineering skills (Java, ObjC, C
++) and learn how to apply those skills to the iOS platform.

DescriptionVenue: Nursing Institute building, Missouri Baptist
Hospital Complex
http://www.slsrc.org/
Introductory demonstration of Radio Antenna Modeling using freely
available computer software.
Jobst Vandrey (AC0LP) will show how to use antenna modeling software
to plan or modify an antenna
design so that it meets specific communication needs. Topics will
include horizontal antennas,
vertical antennas, and directional antennas. Demonstrations will
include how antenna properties
change with wire size, height above ground and physical
orientation. The demonstration will display
some of the basic capabilities of antenna modeling software so that
members who wish can download
the software and begin to experiment with models of their own
antennas. While the demonstration will
focus on wire antennas for the 20 and 40 meter bands, the software
used in the demonstration
will work for antenna designs on all amateur bands.

Once a month, get together for an all-night hacking session. Stay as
long or as short as you'd like.
We started this group to spend time with other St Louis developers.
This group is for anyone who wants
to catch up on that nagging side project at a late night, caffeinated
coding session with like-minded individuals.
All skill levels and languages are welcome.

'c' - the speed of light : more than just a speed limit, it is the
glue between space and time
Professor Francesc Ferrer, Department of Physics, Washington U
201 Crow
In 1905, Albert Einstein postulated in his theory of special
relativity that the speed of light
in vacuum, 'c', is a fundamental constant of nature. The equivalence
of mass and energy (E = mc2),
the relation between space and time - these are among the many
implications of Einsteins postulate
(counterintuitive yet experimentally verified). In this talk, we
will review the measurement attempts
leading to the conclusion, in the 17th century, that light travels at
a finite speed. We will then go on
to explore the consequences of its constancy: from the profound link
between space and time,
to more practical applications such as the Global Positioning System
(GPS), and the study of the evolution of the universe.

TOPIC: - It seems that people are interested in web services using
PSGI-based servers. I am currently working on a project where we use
Plack, so I can show how to write the basics of a server. Neat thing
about this approach is that you can debug it easily and then pass the
code off to a larger-scale service. I can also show how to install
and debug code in the "twiggy" server. This HAD BEEN @ Announce

100 Years of AAVSO – The Role of the Amateur in Astronomy
by
Mike Simonsen
American
Association of
Variable
Star Observers (AAVSO)
Stars like the Sun are, fortunately for us, fairly constant in their
brightness and energy output over millions of years. But there are
many other types of stars whose brightness changes measurably over a
few years, months, days, or even hours. The study of these variable
stars has been a major field of astronomy for many decades.
Professional astronomers rely heavily on amateur observations to
provide the data for their research. One hundred years ago, the
American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) was formed to
facilitate professional and amateur collaborations and to maintain a
storehouse of variable star observations. Mr. Simonsen will review
the development and expansion of AAVSO during the past century, and
look forward to new opportunities for amateur astronomers in the next
century. He will also comment on the vital and expanding role that
amateurs play in the exploration of the universe. Mike Simonsen is the
Membership Director and Development Officer of the AAVSO. He has been
recognized world wide over the past dozen years as a leading variable
star observer. Mr. Simonsen has authored twenty research papers on
his particular interest, the study of cataclysmic variables.

Constant The Universal and Mysterious Fine Structure Constant
Sat, October 22, 10:00am – 11:30am
Crow Hall, Washington University, University City, MO

The fine structure constant made its appearance in physics at the
hands of Arnold Sommerfeld in 1916. Its value is 0.00729735308 or
1/137.0359895. This constant is a measure of the strength of the
interaction between electrons and photons. Just as the mathematical
constant pi (3.14...) is dimensionless, so the fine structure constant
is dimensionless which means that for all physicists throughout the
entire universe the fine structure constant has the same value. It is
truly universal. A Nobel Prize awaits anyone who can explain where
this mysterious constant comes from. But is it really a constant?
Maybe yes, maybe no.

8:00-9:00 Jerry Stutte on "Alien Vault"
Vim is all about getting maximum use out of minimum keystrokes
-- accomplishing more while typing less.
Understanding how to effectively use macros and registers can help
you get there. If you think registers are just extra clipboards,
or that macros only let you play back a sequence of keypresses,
then prepare to be surprised. An impressive amount of power hides
behind these two major features of Vim, especially when they're
combined in interesting (and perhaps unexpected) ways.
Bill just gave well received talks/classes at Strange Loop and at the
Ohio
Linux Fest so he'll have something great for us! Bill Odom has over
two decades of experience as a systems architect and software
developer, working on everything from wiki software for Internet
startups to global identity management solutions for Fortune 500
companies. He's also a long-time member of the Open Source community,
an active member (and periodic leader) of several user groups in
the St. Louis area, and served as president of the Perl Foundation
from 2005 through 2007.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jerry Stutte will be presenting on an Open Source product referred to
as Alien Vault.
Alien Vault represents the bleeding edge on OSSIM & SIEM technologies.
The concept of OSSIM & SIEM (Open Source Information Management)
& (Security Information and Event Management) packages have become
requirements for governments & corporations through out the world..
The Alien Vault (intrusion prevention system) meets & exceeds nearly
all requirements for public audit as required by the Sarbanes-Oxley
Act,
provisioning for the Reporting, Analysis, Incident Management,
& Forensic Logging of Intrusion Prevention, required for audit by the
act.
Alien Vault is amenable to monitor any IT source.
To mention a few components of the package, Alien Vault utilizes:
PHP – the most popular scripting language on the web – has
now
landed on System i. Millions of web programmers use PHP to create
interactive, dynamic web applications quickly and easily, and now
you can join them! Just like RPG programmers, PHP users tend to
focus on "getting the job done," and the simplicity and power of
the language reflects that design perspective.
PHP also incorporates
a straightforward object model that greatly assists procedural
programmers ease into the world of Object Orientation. This
presentation will introduce you to the basics of programming in PHP
on System i by drawing comparisons with the RPG IV language we all
know and love. Jon will also introduce you to some of the other
powerful features of PHP such as web services, email, and database
Modern SOA frameworks offer a layer of abstraction
way above the WS-* alphabet soup. They're powerful way to integrate
new and legacy components, implemented using different technologies
by different types of developers. This talk will includes brief
descriptions of major components of SOA and how they complement
each other: Message Buses, Business Process Management (BPEL/BPM),
Human Workflow, Complex Event Processing, JCA adapters, SCA. Examples
will be drawn from open source and commercial software. I'll pay
special attention to how how java fits into the SOA world. About
the Presenter: Dave DiFranco is a software engineer building SOA
Wash U Physics
-Planck's
constant "h"
-- the constant that quantized the
world
Sat, October 15, 10am – 12pm
Professor Alexander Seidel, Department of Physics, Washington U
201 Crow Hall
At the end of the nineteenth century, physicists saw
themselves faced with a conundrum of logical inconsistencies
and baffling experimental facts that no `classical' theory
was able to resolve. The impending revolution of physics
that would unravel this Gordian Knot was triggered in 1900
when Max Planck realized that physics at small scales must
include a hitherto unknown constant of nature -- "h", the
'quantum of action'. In this talk we will explore how the
mere existence of this fundamental constant changes the way
we look at the world, from energy to the uncertainty
principle, and how it hints at physics we do not know yet.
This October is a series on the "basic units" of physics.
The Saturday morning lecture series is intended to be "for
the public" and concentrates on explaining the concepts
without getting deeply into the math.
Oct 4 JUG Meeting: Change Anything with Cucumber and ATDD
Cucumber Alright, so you've heard the TDD claim to fame. Your code
(Your functionality) is closely protected by an ever vigilant suite of
tests ready to stop bugs before they are even introduced. This sounds
good, eh? While TDD and unit testing provide numerous advantages in
addition to protecting existing functionality, one shortcoming you may
discover is that the scope of the unit test is too small. Yeah, it
tests how that individual class works, but will it test the
application as a whole? Furthermore, will my unit test even be useful
after a big change to the class structure? Not likely. Enter
Acceptance Test Driven Development using Cucumber. Test the whole
application, nothing but the application, and only the application.
Allow yourself to be free to change big things and still have absolute
confidence that your application still performs. Furthermore, doing
ATDD with Cucumber allows your tests to be in English (or Swedish if
you like). Whoa. Tests in English!? That sounds like a bad idea. You
have to see it to believe it. It's DRY and it's awesome. See you
You are invited to attend our meetings. They are usually held on the
first Thursday of every month from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Meetings are
free and open to the public.
A one dollar donation may be made toward the cost of the room;
otherwise, we have no membership dues or other charges for the
meetings. So, please join us at our next meeting or event for fun,
knowledge and networking. All hardware, operating systems and software
are explored.
This group welcomes new PC user hardware and software configuration
problems because it is fun to fix them. Help with Linux, other
Operating Systems and hardware problems is usually available.
# We hold a Linux Configuration Workshop when nothing else more
interesting comes up, or when there is no other event or activity
scheduled. Problems with other operating systems and hardware are also
frequently fixed. New software tools are often demonstrated. Linux is
an Internet capable Networking Operating System that provides many
fully functional applications that perform well on both older and new
computers. Most Linux distributions are free or low cost and provides
an extremely reliable and cost effective alternative to high priced
proprietary software.
# The workshop is where we usually examine, troubleshoot, fix and
repair difficult hardware and software configuration problems for
Linux newcomers.
# Bring your Linux PC to our hands on workshop to troubleshoot your
Linux installation, network connection or X Window GUI configuration
problem. We have full connectivity to the Internet on site and know
how to use it. # Just remember to bring your PC, monitor, keyboard,
mouse, cables, cords, power strips and two diskettes.
