"FIRST" high school robotics competition -international finals!!
When: Apr 25 - 30, 2011
Where: Edward Jones Dome football stadium
Description: These are the international finals. It is the 1st time held
in St. Louis and we will also have these finals in 2012 & 2013. The
regionals were on SLU's campus in March. The idea is for high schools to
compete against each other in building robots which will compete in a
game. The game rules are changed each year so that the students need to
"think it thru new" and not just rebuild last year's model. The students
have had ~6 weeks to build the robot after being told the new game.
Segway inventor Ray Kurzwiel , who started the FIRST competition, wnats
to bring the excitement of high school sports to engineering & science!
Go volunteer to be an advisor at your favosite high school! Last year,
he announced the (inter)national finals had been granted to ST. Louis'
Edward Jones Dome football stadium for 2011 thru 2013! more details

by Ed Wehner.
Bring your Linux, MAC or Windows laptop and learn , "hands on", how
to create 3D models using open source 3D Modeling tools. The techniques
we will cover are used in 3D Art, Games and major motion pictures. In
this first of two parts, we will show you how to make some simple
objects such as an hour glass, apple, table, etc. We will also cover
some of the basics of object textures and materials to give a real life
look to your rendered objects.
"The Art of Illusion" software will be provided and requires java.
This will lead to next month when we will learn to animate
these drawings/models.
Ed is formerly a multi-term president of SLUUG as well as vice
president and bod spent years organizing our meetings and keeping our
servers available in years where we expanded into multiple SIGs and
multiple mtngs each month. In his day job, Ed has lead the IT dept at
MEMC Electronix Materials in St. Charles before & during their
conversion to SAP, and has been a senior IT consultant for the state of

GIS Applications in Aquatic Ecology/Biology.
Deadline to apply for FREE NSF workshop on Aquatic GIS.
When: Saturday, Apr 30, 2011
GIS Applications in Aquatic Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Where: Department of Biology and Center for Environmental Sciences Saint
Louis University, Saint Louis, Missouri When: June 27-29, 2011 and
August 17-19, 2011
Workshop purpose and goals: The application of GIS to
the study of biological patterns and processes in terrestrial systems
has expanded dramatically during the past decade and served as a
valuable resource in ecology and evolutionary biology. This expansion
is largely due to the availability of relevant environmental datasets and
species distribution data. At the same time, GIS-based studies of
aquatic systems have lagged behind and often relied on terrestrial
surrogates for data sources. A general goal of this workshop is to
train & establish an interactive group of researchers and educators applying
GIS techniques to aquatic systems. Applicants with all levels of GIS
experience are welcome; however, the workshop is developed and presented
for aquatic biologists with little to no background in GIS techniques.
The workshop will cover topics including: 1) basic acquisition and
manipulation of GIS data, 2) GIS data sources for aquatic research, 3)
quantification of environmental attributes of species. habitat use at
multiple spatial scales, 4) species distribution modeling, and 5)
development and application of hydrologic data to studies of aquatic
systems. The majority of the training will be conducted using ArcGIS;
however, other software options will be presented. Computer space will
be provided for each attendee. More details on the specific schedule
will be provided in the near future. Participants: Faculty/Research
Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, and Graduate Students conducting
research in aquatic systems.
Sponsors: National Science Foundation & Saint Louis University
Cost: Free (Participants responsible for meals,
travel, and lodging) Application: Please email a statement of
application including a description of your research interests (maximum
1 page) and a C.V. to Dr. Jason Knouft at aquaticGIS(a)slu.edu by April
30. GIS experience is not a prerequisite for the workshop. A total of
20 spots are available for each workshop. Please indicate the dates you
would like to attend (June 27-29 or August 17-19). If you are available
for both dates (one or the other), please indicate this in your
application.

How to Build an Online Brand
Thu, April 14, 12pm . 1pm 1234 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63103
This is the monthly mtng of the StL chapter of the Society of Professional Journalist but it has appeal for IT techies.
"How do you Build Your Online Brand?"
How do you make a name for yourself in these days of online overload, with journalists, bloggers, commenters and everyone else with access to the Internet competing for attention? Many successful "web-eneurs" have established a personal brand and, with the help of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, made their own name and their sites go-to destinations on the Web.
The St. Louis Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will look at how to set up, polish and market your personal brand, and the potential pitfalls of putting too much of yourself out there, at its next lunch gathering.
The lunch will feature:
Evan Benn, who in just a couple of years at the Post-Dispatch has made himself and his Hip Hops blog reliable and popular sources for all things hops-related across the region.
Angela Ortmann, who has used her stlwinegirl website and web identity to build up an event and consultation business. Earlier this year, the Riverfront Times honored her for Best Use of Facebook to Promote a Personal Brand in its Point & Clique awards.
Chad Garrison, writer and blog manager/editor at the Riverfront Times, and one of the judges of its Point & Clique awards, honoring the best use of the Web by local people and groups.
Scott Granneman, an expert on web security and adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis, teaching courses on technology, security, and the Internet. He also plans, develops and hosts websites.
The lunch is set for noon Thursday, April 14, at Lucas Park Grille, 1234 Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis. Cost (including soft drink and tip) is $10 for SPJ members and $12 for nonmembers.

Title: Clojure: Art of Abstraction
Presented By: Alex Miller (Revelytix)
About the Presentation:
Clojure is a new language that combines the power of Lisp with an existing hosted VM ecosystem (the Java VM). Clojure is a dynamically typed, functional, compiled language with performance on par with Java. At the heart of all programming lies the need for abstraction, be it abstraction over our data or abstraction over the processes that operate upon it. Clojure provides a core set of powerful abstractions and ways to compose them. These abstractions are based in a heritage of Lisp but also cover many aspects of object-oriented programming as well. This talk will examine these abstractions and introduce you to both Clojure and functional programming. Attendees are not expected to be familiar with either Clojure or FP.
