Most users don't ever realize just how much of a memory hog Perl is.
Being Perl, however, the language makes it easy to find out
using Devel::Peek and Devel::Size. This talk uses both to peer into
scalars, arrays, and hashes and shows some ways to reduce the
overhead when dealing with long-lived or high-volume applications.

THIS month= Introduction to Functional Programming and F#.
_____Every month= Developers should not align themselves with platforms
and languages, but with principles and ideas. An "alternative" view
of the Microsoft development universe--a view that challenged the
"Microsoft-only" approach to software development.
He distilled his thoughts into four key developer characteristics
which form the basis of the ALT.NET philosophy:
1. You're the type of developer who uses what works while
keeping an eye out for a better way.
2. You reach outside the mainstream to adopt the best of any
community: Open Source, Agile, Java, Ruby, etc. ...

HTML 5 for Web App Developers
HTML5 is the perhaps the biggest change in HTML since we
were first introduced to it back in the early 90's.
The lament is that HTML was frozen
in some designed-by-committee" state since the 90's.
HTML5 finally gives us a standardized way to store data
locally in the user's machine. We're not talking about
little cookies here; HTML5 offers your web application
5MB of local storage. HTML5 also introduces a
significant caching mechanism to allow offline
applications.
And there's still more. An element offering a standard
mechanism for rendering video. (No more Flash problems!)

The basic session,

VIM Workshop
by Bill Odum.
Files and Buffers and Windows and Tabs (and More!)
Vim provides a wealth of features for
editing several files simultaneously, arranging
them into workspaces, and then navigating among
them. Unfortunately, it's not always obvious
how to use these features, or how they all fit
together. If you've ever wondered why Vim won't
let you edit one file before saving another,
why :q! doesn't always let you quit, or why Vim's
tab pages seem so weird, then this workshop will
clear up the confusion.
Our main event will be:
mdadm
by Jeff Muse
This presentation covers mdadm, the Linux
software raid management utility.
After a brief look at RAID concepts,
we'll have an explanation of what mdadm is capable
of doing and demonstrations of it in action.
Minimize unplanned downtime due to disk failure
on your Linux systems by implementing mdadm, Linux
software RAID. (If you're not sure what RAID is,
don't worry, we'll talk about that first.)
mdadm supports most common RAID levels, costs less
than a hardware RAID controller, and can have
better performance.
Don't have a system with massive numbers of
disks to experiment with? We'll show you how to
simulate one using virtual machines!
