JOINING THIS ONLINE SESSION:
6:00pm Begin testing of controls, hearing, screen sharing and speaking.
During this half hour period, others may be able to help you.
Joining without ear buds, earphones or headset may result in a feedback
loop with a builtin laptop microphone. Using at-least earbuds is highly
recommended. Using Ethernet is better than WiFi connectivity.
If you do not make the effort and take the time to get your connection
working correctly, you may be very disruptive. Try dropping your
connection and rejoin. That sometimes fixes issues. But, do so slowly,
as granting access to your microphone and camera too quickly is the
current main problem. Also, there are often sound settings in different
browsers that may need to be changed.
======================================================================
WHEN YOU ENTER THIS ONLINE SESSION:
Do NOT remain showing as Fellow Jitster. Set your identity to show
first name and last name. We do prefer that you use your full last
name. Instead of full last name you could just follow first name with
an initial.
Going into the chat room may allow you to set your name there. Or, at
three vertical dots (more actions) in lower right hand corner, select
Settings, then under Profile "Set your display name" (you can ignore
the "Set your gravatar email block").
Meeting only recorded for attendance tracking and quality control.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
START OF MEETING:
6:30pm The meeting starts. You should have tested sound and video.
Assistance with controls, hearing, screen sharing and speaking ends.
Anybody joining after 6:30pm that experiences issues with controls,
hearing, screen sharing or speaking should only use chat room to ask
questions or make comments.
Annoying disruptions may cause you to be kicked off the session.
You might be muted on entry, so join early if you want to test your
camera or microphone. Use letter V on keyboard to toggle your camera.
Use letter M on keyboard to toggle (mute or unmute) your audio. Full
list of short cuts available with the ? key.
All might be muted at this point. You may have to unmute yourself
in order to speak. You can ask questions and make comments in chat room.
You do not need a camera, nor microphone to just watch and listen with
using your browser.

ORDER OF EVENTS:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
TOPICS:
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user at the meeting may select general and specific topics.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share our knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving, techniques and troubleshooting.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use. However, it has many benefits.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions.

stlLUG
Thursday 20 Oct (THIS week. 4 days.) 6:30pm
Steven Lembark will walk us thru...
how to encrypt File systems in User SpacE (FUSE) for securing your private data. Both LOCAL & REMOTE.
He’ll show us how to set it up, mount it, back it up, and recover it.
In the beginning was LUKS, and it was good... enough.
It encrypted a filesystem but it required privileged
access and knowlege of LVM and encryption standards.
(Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS) is a disk encryption specification created in 2004. It encrypts entire block devices and is therefore well-suited for protecting the contents of mobile devices such as removable storage media.)
Then came FUSE (File systems in User SpacE ). This allows a non-privileged user to mount filesystems using local code. The variety of
filesystems supported show just how useful the idea can be.
One early example encfs, which made it easy for non-
privileged users to access and encrypted filesystem.
Its an Encrypted FileSystem in user-space (EncFS). It runs stackably in userspace, using the FUSE library for the filesystem interface. EncFS is open source.
Over time holes in its algorithm emerged and it became
un-maintained and is no longer secure. The good news
is, as every competent programmer knows, There's More
Than One Way To Do It. (At least 5!)
This talk looks at some alterntives to EncFS, their
foibles, and how to use them.

Man Pages by: Stan Reichardt <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.sluug.org/bio/Stan_Reichardt&sa=D&…>
Man pages refers to the man command, which is the system's manual pager. Each page argument given to man is normally the name of a program, utility or function. The manual page associated with each of these arguments is then found and displayed. A section, if provided, will direct man to look only in that section of the manual. The default action is to search in all of the available sections following a pre-defined order (see DEFAULTS), and to show only the first page found, even if page exists in several sections.
MAIN Topic: Steam Deck by Tyler Rudie
Released on Feb 25th; Valve released the latest foray into the gaming hrdwr market with the Steam Deck. Utilizing a AMD Zen 2 APU, 16gb of memory, & using Arch Linux to power the Steam sftwr. We will dive into how this device works, the goal for Valve, & how this helps us in the broader Linux ecosystem. Also demo games that I own working on the device.
From Wikipedia:
The Steam Deck is a hand held <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_PC&sa=D…> gaming computer <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaming_computer&…> developed by Valve Corporation <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_Corporatio…>. Steam Deck can be played as a handheld (or connected to a monitor in the same manner as the Nintendo Switch <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Switch&…>).
It runs SteamOS which is a fork of ArchLinux. The Proton <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_(software…> compatibility layer <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compatibility_la…> allows it to run sftwr written for MS-Win on this Linux machine. Therefore games written for MS-Win can be run as well as native Linux games from the Steam library.
It is an x86-64-v3 <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64%23Microar…> device with integrated gaming inputs. The system is an open platform, allowing users to install other compatible games on the device or other operating systems <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system…>.
Details (& Zoom login) will be published on https://www.sluug.org/ <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.sluug.org/&sa=D&source=calendar&us…> when available.

problems for Linux newcomers. Problems with other operating systems and
hardware are also frequently fixed.
