JOINING THIS ONLINE SESSION:
6:00pm Begin testing of controls, hearing, screen sharing and speaking.
During the next half hour period, others may be able to help you.
Joining without ear buds, earphones or headset may result in a feedback
loop with a builtin laptop microphone. Using at-least earbuds is highly
recommended. Using Ethernet is better than WiFi connectivity.
If you do not make the effort and take the time to get your connection
working correctly, you may be very disruptive. Try dropping your
connection and rejoin. That sometimes fixes issues. But, do so slowly,
as granting access to your microphone and camera too quickly is the
current main problem. Also, there are often sound settings in different
browsers that may need to be changed.
======================================================================
WHEN YOU ENTER THIS ONLINE SESSION:
Do NOT remain showing as Fellow Jitster. Set your identity to show
first name and last name. We do prefer that you use your full last
name. Instead of full last name you could just follow first name with
an initial.
Going into the chat room may allow you to set your name there. Or, at
three vertical dots (more actions) in lower right hand corner, select
Settings, then under Profile "Set your display name" (you can ignore
the "Set your gravatar email block").
Meeting only recorded for attendance tracking and quality control.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
START OF MEETING:
6:30pm The meeting starts. You should have tested sound and video.
Assistance with controls, hearing, screen sharing and speaking ends.
Anybody joining after 6:30pm that experiences issues with controls,
hearing, screen sharing or speaking should only use chat room to ask
questions or make comments.
Annoying disruptions may cause you to be kicked off the session.
You might be muted on entry, so join early if you want to test your
camera or microphone. Use letter V on keyboard to toggle your camera.
Use letter M on keyboard to toggle (mute or unmute) your audio. Full
list of short cuts available with the ? key.
All might be muted at this point. You may have to unmute yourself
in order to speak. You can ask questions and make comments in chat room.
You do not need a camera, nor microphone to just watch and listen with
using your browser.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
ORDER OF EVENTS:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
TOPICS:
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user at the meeting may select general and specific topics.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share our knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving, techniques and troubleshooting.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use. However, it has many benefits.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions.

Thurs May 16 6:30pm
Topic: The History of Computing from 1980 to 1990.
Presenter Scott Granneman is going to break it down into decades.
So, why talk about all that old stuff? "To understand 'how we got here.'"
is how all historians will point out that you want to know the history.
What were the problems that we were trying to solve? We are living with
the solutions...and the new problems caused by those solutions, ...so we
should understand what was being attempted.
Back in January, Ed Howland told us about the "History of The Unix Shell".
And, we learned the above usefulness of history. And in March, Scott
started this series with "The History of Computing since 1968".
So, Scott will give us the decade by decade description of the
important events & inventions in computing. And we'll understand what
they have influenced in your problems today.
Back in the '80s, the push was to stop using those mainframe computers
"in the CLOUD". Your data and your computing "should be" moved onto your
own physical desktop on that new, powerful DESKTOP computer! Things have
changed....or reverted?
Scott is a long time member and frequent presenter of SLUUG. He is the
author of "The Linux Phrase Book" from O'Rieley Press.
The ZOOM URL is in Stan's note below.

Robert Levitt (rblevitt(a)gmail.com) had sent to announce an earlier version
of the below.
This month's SLUUG general mtng is
Wed *8 May* 2024.
6:30pm
*BASE* Topic:*An adventure in starting network "sniffing".* Episode 1 of
a series!
Presenter: Grant Taylor & Lee Lammert
<https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.sluug.org/bio/Lee_Lammert&sa=D&sou…>
Just starting to "sniff" to see what is going on at that network
interface?
Is it: ... fast? ...Slow? ...Screwed up? ...HACKED??
What are you looking for?
What are the tools (WireShark, Sniffer, etc...)?
How to start sniffing...?
Have you ever:
- "sniffed" a network?
- Searched for specific traffic (e.g.DNS)?
- Captured that traffic without taking disk space on that source system?
- Analyzed that traffic in clear text?
Be sure to attend the tutorial on Wednesday and get these questions
answered, and more!
But wait!! This is only the *FIRST tutorial in a series* of increasing
complexity with members of the "SLUUG Sysadmin team" contributing different
perspectives to diagnose issues with one of our serves.
Tease: If you're curious what *"tcpdump"*, *"Wireshark"*, *"tshark"*, and
*"snoop"* have to do with network sniffing, then you're going to want to
make sure to attend ....
And, if you thought sniffing *un*encrypted traffic was
impressive, wait until you can do and SEE with *encrypted traffic.* Yes,
you read that correct, we're going to look into encrypted traffic from a
network sniffer. (More likely eencrypted will be in future month's
presentation, but tonite will lead you to it.)
~7:15pm
*MAIN* Topic:* "Cybersecurity & AI" , a review. *
Presenter: Tony Zafiropoulos
<https://www.google.com/url?q=https://fixvirus.com/about-us-full-story/&sa=D…>
Reviewing where we are and what we need to look out for both positive vs.
negative (IE. *AI *as used *in attacks* *vs.* *in defense*)
============================================
The *URL* link to connection instructions for this meetng is posted earlier
on the day of the meetng, at the above home page. It is the link
called "*linked

-
- *ONLINE MEETINGS ONLY* until further notice.
- *ONLINE* sessions will use a remote video meeting service.
- *HOW TO CONNECT *instructions will be on the *https://www.sluug.org/

refreshed each time you check the web page for the instructions.
-
- We will open the remote session at about *6:00 PM*, so that you can join
early to test sharing your microphone, screen and video camera.
==============================
Meetings are every 2nd Wednesday of the month *from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.*
==============================
The *Saint Louis Unix Users Group *(*SLUUG*) is an IRS 501c(6) designated
not-for-profit professional association dedicated to education and
communication among computer users. SLUUG members include many Linux and
UNIX professionals, Networking experts, System experts, hobbyists,
retirees, students, plus many others who are interested in Unix, Unix-like
Operating Systems, Linux, BSD and other Free Open Source Software (FOSS)
applications, products, projects and services.
*SLUUG* is your forum for exchanging information about OPEN standards, OPEN
systems, OPEN source, products, services and architectures.
We usually start the general meeting with our *BASE* introductory level
session (often focused on personal computing), which may include either
simple tutorials, displays of newly discovered web sites, command line
wonders, demonstrations of useful applications, amazing graphical packages,
major resolution of long standing anomalies, blinking lights, or quantum
shifts in both time and space. Then we will have our usually quick welcome,
introduction, administrative announcements, and a Call For Help - Questions
and Answers Period. After all that, we may take a break before our *MAIN*
event.
