GIS Digital Cartography course starts 8 wks @ Wash U
Description http://ucollege.wustl.edu
Digital Cartography course : 8-week course: 5/24/11-7/21/11
Course Description:
In today's world, it is imperative that students develop the
necessary skills to communicate their ideas to a large audience
in an efficient manner. Graphics and visual representations
are one of the most effective ways to neatly convey complex
data sets to readers. This course presents both theoretical
and hands-on mapping and graphical problems to students.
The course teaches students the basics of GIS based mapping
for producing publishable work. Students will develop basic
skills in computer-aided mapping and computer drafting primarily
using ARCGIS, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft
PowerPoint.

Citizen Computer Science:
How YOU can find aliens, fold proteins, measure galaxies and more....
Science On Tap will meet for the last time before we break for
the +summer on Wednesday, May 25th, 7pm-8:30pm
at the Schlafly Bottleworks, in Maplewood at 7260 Southwest Ave.
This month features Robert Pless, PhD,
Assoc. Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Washington
University speaking on Citizen Science: How YOU can find aliens,
fold proteins, measure galaxies and more.... Professor Pless
is very popular with the students and has received some of the
top teaching ratings. Here are some of the students' comments:
he is hilarious, he can make anything interesting; he is such a
funny, great guy.... this is my favorite class to attend; he is
so cool and his explanations are very clear; he really, really
knows his stuff; awesome lecturer, he is incredible! This is
another rare opportunity to hear +a topic in computer science
that is applicable to us and that will be clearly presented
and fun! SETI@home, Folding@home, and Galaxy Zoo are games
that allow anyone with a computer and an Internet connection
to help solve large-scale scientific problems. Seti@home is a
scientific experiment that uses internet-connected computers in
the Search for Extra-Terrestial Intelligence (SETI). Folding@home
+is a distributed computing project where people throughout the
world can help scientists study diseases by folding proteins on
their personal computers. Galaxy Zoo uses Hubble Space Telescope
imagery of thousands of galaxies for people to classify according
to their shapes. Dr. Pless, in conjunction with three other
university centers, will be overseeing the ImageQuest project
to enhance citizen science efforts that involve biological
imaging. Professor Pless will share his perspectives on
why the public can beat the best computer programs and even
trained researchers on some problems. He will also highlight +new
opportunities for engaging in âtizen scien5%) +nd mobile phone
applications. Professor Pless' research at Washington University
in St. Louis focuses on Computer Vision. His outlook on life is
buoyed by knowing that people are still better than computers at
many activities. Dr. Pless is back by popular demand. The first
time Dr. Pless spoke at Science On Tap, in Feb. 2008, he discussed
Video Surveillance Systems. http://scienceontap.wustl.edu
This is a free event, but seating is limited and there are
no reservations. We meet on the last Wednesday of the month

Description:
The Physics & Chemistry of the Nuclear Rector
Disaster in Japan.
Prof. Lee G. Sobotka,
Department of Chemistry and Physics, Wash U.
The Dai-ichi nuclear power station in Fukushima failed
to keep 3 reactors and at least one spent fuel pond cool
when an earthquake and tsunami cut its electric on March 11.
This talk will present the chemistry and physics of this
disaster. The talk will NOT deal with either the broader
issues of potential health effects of this ongoing event
nor with the issue of nuclear power in general. These
discussions, while prime subjects for other presentations,
must follow an understanding of how these power plants
are supposed to work, what went wrong and what must be
done to mitigate, as best as possible, the deleterious
consequences of this still unfolding disaster.
This talk is TIGHTLY focused on these physical science issues.
Crow Hall is under the silver astronomy telescope dome,

The Webalizer is a GPL application that generates web pages of
analysis, from access and usage logs, i.e. it is web log analysis
software. It is one of the most commonly used web server
administration tools. (source: Wikipedia). It is one of the
more simple and straightforward tools and a good place to start.
Lee Lammert is the treasure of SLUUG who, in his alter ego, is the mild
mannered chief scientist of OMNItec, a company that provides network,
server, and consulting solutions. But, when the BatSignal shines in
the sky, he jumps outta the hot tub and puts on his cape and cowl and
slides down that brass Batpole into The BatCave...

"NASA's Planetary Exploration From Mid-Town St. Louis",
an illustrated lecture by
Richard Heuermann of Washington University, will
be featured at the May meeting of the St. Louis
Astronomical Society. McDonnell Hall is accessible
from Forsyth Boulevard via Tolman Way. The event,
cosponsored by NASA's Missouri Space Grant
Consortium, is open to the public free of charge.
Rich will explain how St.Louis scientists play a prominent
role in the exploration of our solar system. NASA's robot
spacecraft and orbiting telescopes are actively
exploring planets, moons, comets, and asteroids,
from Mercury out to Saturn. One spacecraft is
well on its way to Pluto. Images and data are
beamed back to Earth to be archived in St. Louis
and studied by planetary scientists from all over
the world. It is here that all of the images and
instrument readings for solid surfaces from all
NASA missions, past and present, are stored and
cataloged. It is in St. Louis, at Washington
University and UM-St. Louis, that scientists are
studying the origin of the Sun, Earth and the
other planets; the evolution of planets and
moons; the location of metal, mineral, and water
resources on the Moon; indications of prehistoric
water on the surface of Mars, and other topics on
the frontiers of planetary science.
Rich Heuermann is the Outreach
Program Coordinator of the NASA Missouri Space
Grant Consortium at Washington University. A
Webster Groves resident, he is also an amateur
astronomer and long-time member of the Saint Louis Astronomical Society.

tutorial = Homebrew package manager (Mac OS X)
by Don Ellis
main presentation =
"Exploring Vim Editor's Visual Mode:
Seeing Is Believing."
by Bill Odom
Wed, May 11, 6:30pm . 9:00pm
Graybar Electric Co, Inc.

Your forum for exchanging information about open standards,
open systems, open source, products, services and architectures.
This month =
The basics portion will be
Homebrew by Don Ellis.
This will be a general introduction to a package manager for
Mac OS X machines. Homebrew is said to be a compelling
alternative to MacPorts and Fink. The Homebrew core and all
the formulae are written in Ruby, so it could be easy to add stuff.
AND... Bill Odom returns with another dazzeling presentation
of the neatest tricks with the Vim Editor!
"Exploring Vim Editor's Visual Mode: Seeing Is Believing."
"vi" stands for "visual," but it's Vim that lives up to the
promise of the name. If you haven't taken advantage of
Visual Mode, you're missing out on one of Vim's most
powerful (and time-saving) enhancements over stock vi.
This workshop will cover the essentials of Visual Mode,
explain how it fits into the "vi way," and dive into some of
its less-obvious, but incredibly useful, capabilities.

Reporting Services Data Visualization NEW IN SSRS 2008 R2
(Gary Bell, BI Architect at Aspect Software will present this)
Sparklines, Data Bars, and State Indicators:
Sparklines are small graphics that use color and shape
around a line or axis to communicate many data points.
They can be inserted into a table or matrix and their
axis size automatically. They can also be used as
stand-alone charts. Data bars represent the value i
n a cell by the bar.s length. The scale of multiple
bars in the same table or matrix enable easy visual
comparisons between cells. State indicators are v
isualized as a set of built-in icon sets to depict the
status against a value, goal, or a trend. You can also
create your own icon sets. Colors, icon, and size can
change based on data. Please RSVP, so that we can have
a count for the lunch order, by email to:
events(a)datasig.org
This meeting will also be broadcasted via Lync.

With the forthcoming release of Java7, a number of
things come to fruition, both in the Java language
and in the libraries, and it's important for Java
developers to know what those features are, and
how they change the game of writing Java code--or not.
