TOPICS?
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user in the meeting may select the topics.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share the knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving and effective techniques.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use. However, it has many benefits.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions.
Order of Events:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.

TOPIC Update on SuSE by Michael Carrington
Including Rancher Labs acquisition (Kubernettes system) by SUSE Corp.
and SuSE Storage update.
Rancher is a complete software stack for teams adopting containers.
It addresses the operational and security challenges of managing
multiple Kubernetes clusters, while providing DevOps teams with
integrated tools for running containerized workloads.
There's only one version of Rancher; it's 100% free and open-source
software.
A fundamental difference between Kubernetes and Docker is that
Kubernetes is meant to run across a cluster while Docker runs on a
single node. Kubernetes is more extensive than Docker Swarm and is
meant to coordinate clusters of nodes at scale in production in an
efficient manner.
Kubernetes contains powerful functionality for orchestrating
applications and guaranteeing service availability. Rancher adds a
complete UI and workload management layer to Kubernetes, that simplifies
adoption and integrates CI/CD as well as key open source projects
The Top Alternatives & Competitors to Rancher:
Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) (173)
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. (50)
Kubernetes. (48)
Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) (31)
Docker
AWS Fargate. ...
Cloud Foundry. ...
Portainer. ...
Mirantis Kubernetes Engine (formerly Docker Enterprise)
Cisco Container Platform

We will open the remote session at about 6:00PM. At 6:45 PM we start
with introductions, announcements, current events of interest, and a
general CALL FOR HELP segment. Then we will go into the presentation
of our main topic, sometime around or after 7:00 PM.
The STLLUG meetings are usually on the third Thursday of each month from

During the 4 February SLACC meeting we may have forgotten to talk
about the SLUUG elections for this month.
The Saint Louis Unix Users Group (SLUUG) is an IRS 501c(6) designated
not-for-profit professional association dedicated to education and
communication among computer users. SLUUG members include many Linux
and UNIX professionals, Networking experts, System experts, hobbyists,
students, plus many who are interested in Unix, Unix-like Operating
Systems, Linux, BSD and other Free Open Source Software (FOSS)
applications, products, projects and services.
SLUUG hosts web pages, sponsors, and otherwise assists and supports
three related; yet independent, associated local groups. We arrange
for remote meeting sessions, physical meeting places and pay meeting
room fees at county libraries.
The St. Louis Area Computer Club (SLACC) is an informal group, with
no formal appointed, chaired or elected officials. SLACC has strictly
voluntary hosts and participants.
The St. Louis Linux Users Group (STLLUG) is an informal group that
usually has a Linux specific presentation. Votes for its Chairperson
are collected on the annual ballot.
The Newcomer Linux Users Group (NEWLUG) is an informal group with
its own permanent Chairperson.
These informally associated groups are considered to be associated as
Special Interest Groups (SIGS) of SLUUG. They have important indirect
interest in the Board membership, which chooses to aid, promote and
support them now and in the future.
Attendance at any SLUUG meetings, and all of these associated meetings
and remote sessions is considered to count toward voting eligibility.
Displaying your name during the remote sessions allowed your attendance
to be counted. If you attended any two sessions last year, you may
vote by absentee ballot.

BASE: Speedbar by Steve Stegmann
Emacs' Speedbar for fast file access.
SpeedBar is a tool (written in EMACS) for organizing or listing files
and directories
Speedbar is an integral part of Emacs which has been in use since
version 23.2 in 2010. Entering "speedbar" in the emacs command line
causes another frame to be opened to graphically show the current
directory tree which can be traversed upwards and downwards from the
current position. It shows all of the files and directories and each
can be examined with a single mouse click. If the file is not text but
a jpg or pdf or some other file type an auxiliary program will be called
to display the file in an emacs buffer.
This session might show factors common with both personal and enterprise
computing.

MAIN: A Gentle Introduction to git by Robert Citek
From its inception in 2005, git has gone from a version-tracking tool
used by Linux kernel developers to a corporate mainstay for
collaborating in teams on projects. In this talk, we'll go over the
three main parts of a git project ( i.e. working folder, staging area,
and repository ) and how to work with each. In the process, we'll touch
on many of the git objects that make those parts ( e.g. files/folders,
commits, branches, SHAs, etc. ). And we'll do that by creating and
modifying a project from scratch, using git to manage the changes. By
the end, you will have a good basic understanding of how to use git to
work on your own projects to then branch into more advanced uses of git.

LINUX WORKSHOP
The workshop is where we usually configure, examine, fix, install,
repair, and troubleshoot difficult hardware and software configuration
problems for Linux newcomers. Problems with other operating systems and
hardware are also frequently fixed.
The Saint Louis Area Computer Club (SLACC) is the oldest, longest
enduring, continuously meeting personal computer organization active in
the Greater St. Louis Metro Area.

NO PHYSICAL MEETINGS until further notice. Our usual library
reservations for room meetings were cancelled indefinitely. Room fees
had previously been paid by the St. Louis Unix Users Group (SLUUG).
Omnitec Corporation now provides us with this JITSI server.
Face-to-face meeting were usually held on the first Thursday of every
month from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM Central Time, USA. We hope to maintain
that timeline into the future by using ONLINE sessions. All physical
meetings and ONLINE sessions are free and open to the public.
We have no membership dues or other charges for the meetings. So,
