When you write a web application, you need some way to test that it's
working properly. It's also helpful to be able to know when you've
correctly completed a new feature. In this presentation, we'll cover
several Open Source tools that you can use to test any web site. These
tools include Selenium (to drive a web browser), Capybara (simple
front end to Selenium and others), and Cucumber (to write tests in
English). You don't need to be a programmer to understand the
presentation.

We'll cover using these tools with Ruby and Java, but you don't need
to be a programmer to understand the presentation. We've used these
tools successfully on several projects, and found that they can help
us write better applications. Probably the most exciting part is
that our customers and QA testers write the Cucumber acceptance tests
for us.

GIS Applications in Aquatic Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, 3 day
NSF workshop
When
Jun 22 – 24, 2012
Where
St. Louis University, Grand Ave & Laclede Ave. (map)
Description
GIS Applications in Aquatic Ecology and Evolutionary Biology You must
apply for 1 of the 40 available seats in one of the 2 workshops by
April 30. You must describe your interests in biology/aquatic
research with GIS/GPS. 3-day long Aquatic GIS Workshop sponsored by
NSF, again free for participants. This workshop actually teaches you
basics of GIS (about 1.5 days) and rest will be on modeling species
distributions and Biological applications of GIS. Where: Department
of Biology and Center for Environmental Sciences Saint Louis
University, Saint Louis, Missouri When: June 22-24. Identical
workshop also held Aug. 17-19 Workshop purpose and goals: The
application of GIS to the study of biological patterns and processes
in terrestrial systems has expanded dramatically during the past
decade and served as a valuable resource in ecology and evolutionary
biology. This expansion is largely due to the availability of
relevant environmental datasets and species distribution data. At
the same time, GIS-based studies of aquatic systems have lagged behind
and often relied on terrestrial surrogates for data sources. A
general goal of this workshop is to train and establish an interactive
group of researchers and educators applying GIS techniques to aquatic
systems. Applicants with all levels of GIS experience are welcome;
however, the workshop is developed and presented for aquatic
biologists with little to no background in GIS techniques. The
workshop will cover topics including: 1) basic acquisition and
manipulation of GIS data, 2) GIS data sources for aquatic research, 3)
quantification of environmental attributes of species’ habitat use at
multiple spatial scales, 4) species distribution modeling, and 5)
development and application of hydrologic data to studies of aquatic
systems. The majority of the training will be conducted using
ArcGIS; however, other software options will be presented. Computer
space will be provided for each attendee. More details on the
specific schedule will be provided in the near future. Participants:
Faculty/Research Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, and Graduate
Students conducting research in aquatic systems Sponsors: National
Science Foundation and Saint Louis University Cost: Free
(Participants responsible for meals, travel, and lodging) Application:
Please email a statement of application including a description of
your research interests (maximum 1 page) and a C.V. to Dr. Jason
Knouft at aquaticGIS(a)slu.edu by April 30. GIS experience is not a
prerequisite for the workshop. A total of 20 spots are available for
each workshop. Please indicate the dates you would like to attend
(June 22-24 or August 17-19). If you are available for both dates
(one or the other), please indicate this in your application.

Getting Started with Windows Phone
Development Workshop by Nokia
Friday, June 22nd, 2012 at 5pm - 10pm
Microsoft bought Nokia so that some company would use it's MS-
Windows in a phone. With a very small share of the market, its
hoping that someone will want to write an app for MS-Win, so here is a
chance to learn to develop for it.
St. Louis Windows Phone Meetup is pleased to announce a Getting
Started with Windows Phone Development Workshop, sponsored by Nokia,
on June 22, 2012. Nokia Developer Ambassador Rich Dunbar will be
leading the workshop. WP7 enthusiasts and developers of all skill
levels are welcomed! This workshop will be focused on the tools and
resources you have available as a developer/potential developer for
Windows Phone development from Nokia and Microsoft. The event will
begin with a brief presentation from Nokia and will then focus on
ensuring all the proper tools are introduced and installed. We will
review some of the tutorials and quick start projects and then allow
time for the attendees to work on the projects they choose and ask
questions along the way. The goal of the workshop is to help
developers get started on their first Windows Phone app. This
developer workshop is sponsored by Nokia and they have been kind
enough to provide pizza and beverages for the workshop. Thanks,
Nokia! So come on out with your laptop, have the programming tools
installed (or at least downloaded), and arrive hungry for knowledge---
and food, too. Although this meetup is primarily focused on WP7
development, we’ll be sure to make time for some enthusiast chatter as
we’ve done at the previous meetups. WP7 Programming tools you will
need: WP7 SDK 7.1 - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27570
WP7 SDK 7.1.1 Update - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29233
Silverlight for Windows Phone Toolkit - http://silverlight.codeplex.com/releases/view/75888
If you have Windows 8 and are experiencing trouble when installing
any of these tools, please see this page for possible workarounds: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2012/02/29/10274694.aspx
And, as always, your fearless STL WP7 Meetup leader will have
goodies to hand out! We’ll begin the food around 5:30 PM and
probably wrap everything up around 9 PM or so. That way Rich and I
have time to clean up and get out by 10. Rich Dunbar is a Nokia
Developer Ambassador. His role is to help recruit developers for
Windows Phone applications and equip them with the latest tools,
resources and information in order to be successful. Rich is a
developer himself with apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace,
Blackberry App World, and HP webOS App Catalog. He has been involved
in the mobile tech community with webOS for the last several years as
a forum leader, writer, Sr. Editor and community Ambassador. You can
find him on Twitter @RichDunbar and @NokiaDevOKC.

http://www.stlnet.org/ Danielle Cooley on Who are we building this
for, anyway?
In days filled with long meetings and longer searches for that
semicolon you missed, it's easy to forget about the people at the
other end of the chain - the end user. No one wants to build a
product that isn't user-friendly, so what can be done to make sure
what gets built is easy to use? One tool in our arsenal of user
experience tools is the Persona. We'll talk a little about personas,
why we have them, what makes a good one, and how to make sure they are
put to good use.
