TOPIC: System Configuration Updates By David Forrest
David uses a personally designed bash script to copy configuration files.
We'll go thru his script which is run periodically to check for and
record differences in how his particular computer is configured.
The archived configuration files can be utilized for:
1. Cloning to new hardware
2. Rebuilding/reinstalling on existing hardware
3. Rollback/checkpoints in case you think that configuration changes
have caused a problem.
BREAKING NEWS: Last week, in a surprise, the DEATH of CentOS LINUX
was announced by Red Hat! This seems to still not be well understood.
Dave has been using his configuration archiving script on his systems'
CentOS 8 upgrade this year and was planning on using it as an example.
Although NOT originally intended as a subject of this meeting, we will
undoubtedly have some discussion of this shocking news.

Topics?
Whatever the newest user needs to know.
The newest user in the meeting may select the topic.
We won't pick just one ahead of time. We will accept suggestions and
requests, as the course of the meeting will be entirely up to those
that attend. Join us to share the knowledge, learning experiences,
problem solving and effective techniques.
We can mostly explore the traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI),
as it is easy to use, often familiar, and friendly to use. We will NOT
focus on the Command Line Interface (CLI) as it is seldom required and
generally optional for day to day use.
We have access to many formal slide show presentations; but, we use
them only to present information and encourage discussion. We encourage
and prefer lively interaction and user questions. We always want user
questions to be asked. We never think that any question is too dumb.
A selected topic will NOT restrict the course of our meetings. These
topics are tentative. They are only suggestions. Order of Events:
First some simple introductions, administrative minutia, announcements,
and then you can Call For Help during our Questions and Answers period.
Sometimes we will watch a video or have a slide show presentation,
after which there will be general discussions that usually lead to
additional topics.
Sometimes, there can be a live demonstration of a Linux distribution
(distro) installation, updating, changes, features and applications.

BASE: Tracking Airplanes with Open Source by Lee Lammert
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a surveillance
technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite
navigation or other sensors and periodically broadcasts it, enabling
it to be tracked.
The requirement for ADS-B coverage is here. As of 1 January, 2020, every
aircraft in normal US airspace is required to send a position report
every few seconds, called ADS-B. These position reports can then be
captured by any number of specially configured receivers.
This presentation will provide background info on this process, and
continue to build a working receiver with Open Source software to
receive and track these position reports!
This session might show factors common with both personal and enterprise
computing.
MAIN: Typography Basics by Scott Granneman
Typography has been intriguing since the days of mainframe line
printers... IBM Selectrics... Gutenberg... But... still VERY germane to
today's computers User Interface (UI).
We look at words all day, and those words are always presented to us via
fonts. Given the sheer amount of time we spend looking at fonts,
shouldn't we know more about them? In this short talk, Scott will cover
some essential typography terms, some of the common fonts we see
everywhere, and browser defaults and how to change them.

> Just thought I would point out tonite’s topic at the 2600 (Hackers) mtng. Reverse engineering w de-compilers & debuggers. They’ll be using the REMnux distro which apparently already has appropriate tools built-in such as GDB, Radare, and Ghidra. They’ve been utilizing the Kali distro most recently, so y’all can talk about the comparison of these distress as well.
>
> It appears they suggest that you download and install REMnux in advance but I THINK you might still enjoy the mtng even if you just listen along.

> We aren't abandoning the co-operative challenge thing we've been doing. We are just really getting into the weeds this time with some reverse engineering challenges. So that involves using debuggers and de-compilers and probably other de-prefixed words. So step one, Bob is going to show us the basics of using some of the tools of the trade such as GDB, Radare, and Ghidra. After that, we'll use our newfound knowledge to attempt a few challenges as a group.
>
> Usually we say get a copy of Kali as a pre-requisite. Surprisingly, Kali doesn't have these tools installed by default. We did find a distro that focuses on reverse-engineering called REMnux (https://remnux.org/) and appears to have all the basic tools we'll need this time around.
