utilities, and discover how to combine these capabilities in powerful (and often
unexpected) ways.

Controlling Multiple Development Environments Using
Synergy, Virtual Machines, and Reverse SSH.
by Don Ellis
Wed, January 19, 11:30am . 12:45pm
9500 Manchester Rd, Rockhill, MO 63119
http://snug.sluug.org/
A lunch time meeting about SuSE Linux, every 3rd Wednesday at Bandana's
Bar-BQ (corner of Rock Hill and Manchester Rds)
Seating is limited so please RSVP Gary Hollingsworth by mailto:garyh@itinet.com
ABSTRACT:
I will address configuring a set of machines for
development, including:
1) Using a VM as the development machine to avoid cluttering
the main workstation (which may be too small anyway).
2) Using Synergy to allow controlling the VM, the VM host, and
the workstation from the same keyboard.
3) Using DynDNS and reverse SSH to allow accessing the
VM from other locations.
DETAILS: Sometimes the software workbench requires more space and horsepower than is
contained in a portable workstation. Also, some development tools have conflicting
requirements, or cannot be installed in the developer's preferred environment. One
solution is to use one or more virtual machines to host the development environments. If
the VMs are running in a machine other than the primary workstation, the secondary
workstation (VM host) can be controlled with the keyboard and pointer (mouse) of the
primary workstation using Synergy, which allows quick switching among multiple displays
from a single control point. Suggested configurations will also include use of reverse
SSH connections to access a VM running on a remote host.

TOPIC: Winter White Lightning Talks!
Lightning Talks (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_Talk) are typically
between 5-10 minutes. The amount of time you will have will be determined by the number
folks interested in giving talks. I'm pretty sure we have a gong too. Also talks do
NOT have to be perl related. I'd love to see a good variety of topics! Fun is good
too. :)

Microsoft development universe--a view that challenged the "Microsoft-only"
approach to software development.

form the basis of the

what works while keeping an eye out for a better way. 2. You reach outside the mainstream
