TOPIC:
Vim Fandango - The Extended Edition, Director's Cut
<http://stlouis.pm.org/2010/08/vim-fandango-extended-edition-directors.html>
Speaker: Bill Odom
Abstract:
Vim deserves its reputation as one of the most powerful tools in a
developer's toolbox -- but it's not exactly friendly and approachable.
Even long-time users rarely employ more than a fraction of its
capabilities, and new users are often left wondering why so many
apparently-sane people won't shut up about how awesome it is. The
stark UI, the steep learning curve, the host of idiosyncrasies...
mastering Vim is a challenge, and that's putting it politely.
This talk explains why it's worth the effort.
During this presentation, we'll see real-world examples of using Vim
to perform astounding feats that poor souls using lesser editors can
only imagine. We'll cover ways to integrate Vim with your environment,
tailor it to your work, and generally bend it to your every whim.
We'll discuss important settings, advanced techniques, useful
customizations, handy scripts, must-have plugins, crafty tips, and
sneaky tricks. In short, we'll explore how to use Vim most
effectively, so it lives up to the awesome reputation that you'll
soon be telling all your disbelieving friends about.
(Vim is an extension of the Vi editor.)
About Bill Odom:
Bill is a long time developer and well known member in the Perl
community, and was president of The Perl Foundation from 2005 to 2007.
He has worked in many languages for companies in the Midwest and both
coasts, from ActionScript to XSLT, but keeps finding his way back to
Perl.
About St. Louis Perl Mongers:
St. Louis Perl Mongers (STL-PM) is a group of programmers and
programmer types in the St. Louis area that meet to talk about Perl,
computing topics, and anything of interest at the time. STL-PM is
associated with the international Perl Mongers <http://www.pm.org/>
association. We have one official meeting each month on the third
Wednesday of the month and socials whenever someone remembers to
schedule one. There is no fee to attend the meetings and they are
open to anyone. STL-PM welcomes members of any level of knowledge of
Perl, even no knowledge at all. To find out more about St. Louis Perl
Mongers please consider joining this
list<http://groups.google.com/group/stl-pm>and sending out a quick
"hello" or visiting our website <http://stlouis.pm.org/>. If you
don't know Perl we'll even try and help!

Moons of Distinction - The Ice Worlds Europa and Iapetus
by
Ms. Kelsi Singer
planetary geophysicist
Wash U
Icy Moons With Oceans
The gas giant planets of our solar system all have extensive satellite families of
several dozen moons each. Most of these moons are small worlds of ice and rock. Several
have highly distinctive features whose nature and origin are as yet unknown. Ms. Singer
will talk about Jupiter?s satellite Europa, whose lightly cratered outer shell of ice
shields an extensive ocean of water from the cold and radiation of outer space. She will
also discuss the Saturnian satellite Iapetus, a world that sports one hemisphere whiter
than snow and the other darker than asphalt. Using NASA images from the Galileo and
Voyager missions to Jupiter and the Cassini orbiter still actively exploring the Saturn
system, she will provide a close-up view of these ice worlds and an overview of current
theories about their internal structure and surface features.
