2 Oct 2007 Tuesday - 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM
St. Louis Small Business Expo
http://www.sbmon.com/
St. Charles Convention Center
One Convention Center Plaza
St. Charles, MO 63303
-----------------------------------------------
SLUUG volunteers will be participating at another of the St. Louis
Small Business Expo's (held in St. Charles) this October 2nd.
Our booth will be 611, a corner booth, so traffic 'management' will
be better than last spring. At that show, we talked to about 150
people - which was an *excellent* way to 'get the word out' about
Free Software, Linux, Unix, etc. It's also a fantastic venue to
network and make contacts with the SMB/SME community if you're so
inclined.
EPC is providing four machines and monitors, setup with Ubuntu and
SuSE. Novell has given us 60 DVDs and some other stuff to pass out.
SLUUG Members are needed that can commit a few hours for staffing
the booth, and/or the setup & teardown team.
PLEASE NOTE:
We need to get the list of volunteers to the Expo by *MONDAY*, so
that they can have badges ready for us. This is important for folks
to get into the show before it opens. We will post updated lists to
DISCUSS later in the week.
See you all there!

7:30 pm -
Rsyncing System Files with Root Permissions by Carl Fitch
There is no completely safe way of performing backups over the network. Now that was said, we can go on with life.
The problem with backing up over the wire is that, not only does it require the power of root on the machine to be backed up, it also requires the same power on the backup server. As a result both machines are exposed to attack, including all the secrets that the backup server holds. Scary isn't it.
The solution presented in this presentation isn't the only answer. To that end the first part of the presentation will present one solution using ssh and rsnapshot. The second part will be a question and answer session where the attendees can offer their own solutions or suggestions. For a list of solutions with good/bad comparisons see OTHER_SOLUTIONS.txt by JT Morée.
This started as a thread in the DISCUSS list from July 27 thru 31. Some interesting points were made. You can check that thread in the DISCUSS ARCHIEVE
on www.sluug.org.

"Podcasting with Audacity," by Scott Granneman
If you are interesting in podcasting & how audio files are made...
Abstract:
Audacity is universally recognized as the number one software program
for creating podcasts. Hundreds of thousands of amateurs and
professionals alike have created podcasts using Audacity. In this talk,
based on his recent book "Podcasting with Audacity," Scott will go over
the basics: how to install Audacity, plug in your microphone, record
your first podcast, and get it on-line as quickly as possible. In
addition, he'll cover podcasting-specific topics, such as adding
background music and conducting interviews.
Even if you don't use Audacity for your podcasts,
you'll still learn a lot of helpful information.
If you do use Audacity, you'll learn some things you didn't
know!
Bio:
Scott Granneman is an author, educator, and entrepreneur in St. Louis,
Missouri. Scott has written four books - Don't Click on the Blue E!:
Switching to Firefox, Hacking Knoppix, Linux Phrasebook, and Podcasting
with Audacity - and contributed to two: Ubuntu Hacks and Microsoft Vista
for the IT Security Professional. In addition, he is a monthly columnist
for SecurityFocus, and for Linux Magazine. He is an Adjunct Professor at
Washington University in St. Louis, teaching courses on technology,
security, and the Internet. As a Principal of WebSanity, he plans,
develops, and hosts websites for clients in nine states using a
Unix-based content management system. He has given presentations all
over the United States, and loves speaking to people.
Scott is a former VP of SLUUG.
