What!
BASE: *Activating Linux on a Chromebook* by Don Ellis
...which is way different and easier than it used to be.
This tutorial might show factors common with both personal and
enterprise computing.
MAIN: *DNS Wars* by David Forrest
The MAIN presentation is "DNS security improvements" or "DNS Wars"
DNS=Domain Name Service. This allows your computer to ask distant
"authoritative" servers to translate the written name of a site
(ex. sluug.org") into an IP address.
Traditional DNS traffic is unencrypted, meaning that, even if you
think you've encrypted the CONTENT of your communication, anyone
can easily get a list of what sites you visit by name.
Encrypting the DNS traffic, as well as other improvements is what
WILL happen in 2020.
The DNS resolution process has been abused for surveillance,
advertising insertion, and exfiltration. It has even been used to
sneak Bitcoin/crypto-currency mining JavaScript onto the user's
system. The DNS resolution process is soon to be under forced
revision.
Topics included will be:
* EDNS Extended DNS,
* IRTS Working Group studying Resolverless DNS.
* EP protections,
* DNSsec signatures,
* DNSmasq,
* I18N international non-latin character sets.
Also discussed will be the Cloudflare service which will block
malicious content (AND OPTIONALLY adult-content).
