"Machine learning and Natural Language Processing"
by Prof. Kevin Scannell, St. Louis University, Dept of Comp Sci.
In Februaury, IBM's computer Watson ran a SuSE OS to compete
in the TV show "Jeopardy!" against the 2 humans who are the
record champions. Watson had to understand the questions,
including the context. This talk will NOT specifically be
about the Watson computer but in general Prof. Scannell
will explain what it takes to get a computer to understand humans.
Prof. Scannell spoke at SLUUG ~2 yrs ago about setting up programs
and web pages to be ready for multi-language usage. He is a
frequent translator for Irish and celtic languages. He has also
spoken at a number of other StL tech mtngs.

"FIRST" high school robotics competition -international finals!!
Apr 25 . 30, 2011
Edward Jones Dome football stadium
These are the international finals. It is the 1st time held in St. Louis and we
will also have these finals in 2012 & 2013. The regionals were on SLU's campus in
March. The idea is for high schools to compete against each other in building robots
which will compete in a game. The game rules are changed each year so that the students
need to "think it thru new" and not just rebuild last year's model. The
students have had ~6 weeks to build the robot after being told the new game. Segway
inventor Ray Kurzwiel, who started the FIRST competitio, wnats to bring the excitement of
high school sports to engineering & science! Go volunteer to be an advisor at your
favosite high school! Last year, he announced the (inter)national finals had been granted
to ST. Louis' Edward Jones Dome football stadium for 2011 thru 2013!
