Serverless Basics
by
Franklin M. Siler
You've probably heard the term "serverless" thrown around- but what does it
mean? You may have even heard the terms "lambda", "function as a
service", or "cloud function". What are these, and why are they just the
beginning? Should you get in on this way of thinking? Is it complicated? Do you have to
change a lot of things? The answer, of course, is "yes, no, or maybe"- but we
are going to talk through the main ideas and how they may or may not be relevant for your
application. Spoiler: the big boys are using this stuff, and you can too.
(At the end of the talk, and more advanced than the intended content, we may ask Frank
about React/GraphQL & Flask on top of DynamoDB vs Aurora/Postgress.)
Frank is a geek turned lawyer turned recovering lawyer, and is now a corporate minion
doing DevOps and architecture work. He's been running Linux since 1996 (Slackware
3.0.3 copied on many floppies, since he didn't yet own a CD-ROM drive in his own
machine), and been a professional systems administrator since about 2001. Through
college, grad school, and law school, and while practicing law, Frank made a habit of
leveraging technology to manage clubs he participated in, consult on various interesting
projects, and even use heavy analytics software to produce legal paperwork. Frank grew up
in St. Charles and has recently repatriated there from west County.

Editor’s note:
Serverless is an interesting concept! Yes…it is “in the cloud” and for those of
us more concerned with running our own hardware it may not seem important. BUT,
serverless should be renamed priceless in my opinion because it actually means that what
you have run is too small to bill for!!!
I can foresee a growing demand for this for small business and even perhaps home
users. It is a tool that all computer geeks are going to have to know is available.
