8:00-9:00 Jerry Stutte on "Alien Vault"
Vim is all about getting maximum use out of minimum keystrokes
-- accomplishing more while typing less.
Understanding how to effectively use macros and registers can help
you get there. If you think registers are just extra clipboards,
or that macros only let you play back a sequence of keypresses,
then prepare to be surprised. An impressive amount of power hides
behind these two major features of Vim, especially when they're
combined in interesting (and perhaps unexpected) ways.
Bill just gave well received talks/classes at Strange Loop and at the
Ohio
Linux Fest so he'll have something great for us! Bill Odom has over
two decades of experience as a systems architect and software
developer, working on everything from wiki software for Internet
startups to global identity management solutions for Fortune 500
companies. He's also a long-time member of the Open Source community,
an active member (and periodic leader) of several user groups in
the St. Louis area, and served as president of the Perl Foundation
from 2005 through 2007.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jerry Stutte will be presenting on an Open Source product referred to
as Alien Vault.
Alien Vault represents the bleeding edge on OSSIM & SIEM technologies.
The concept of OSSIM & SIEM (Open Source Information Management)
& (Security Information and Event Management) packages have become
requirements for governments & corporations through out the world..
The Alien Vault (intrusion prevention system) meets & exceeds nearly
all requirements for public audit as required by the Sarbanes-Oxley
Act,
provisioning for the Reporting, Analysis, Incident Management,
& Forensic Logging of Intrusion Prevention, required for audit by the
act.
Alien Vault is amenable to monitor any IT source.
To mention a few components of the package, Alien Vault utilizes:
Arpwatch
Pof
Nessus
Snort
Spade
Tcptrack
Ntop
Nagios
Osiris
Snare
OSSEC
PHP – the most popular scripting language on the web – has
now
landed on System i. Millions of web programmers use PHP to create
interactive, dynamic web applications quickly and easily, and now
you can join them! Just like RPG programmers, PHP users tend to
focus on "getting the job done," and the simplicity and power of
the language reflects that design perspective.
PHP also incorporates
a straightforward object model that greatly assists procedural
programmers ease into the world of Object Orientation. This
presentation will introduce you to the basics of programming in PHP
on System i by drawing comparisons with the RPG IV language we all
know and love. Jon will also introduce you to some of the other
powerful features of PHP such as web services, email, and database
access.
Jon Paris a popular development guru and trainer with a number of
speaker
excellence awards from COMMON, is a frequent forum contributor,
author and speaker at technical conferences and User Group meetings
around the world.
This meeting begins at noon with lunch and
socializing at SPAZIO. At 1:00, Jon will begin the educational
Modern SOA frameworks offer a layer of abstraction
way above the WS-* alphabet soup. They're powerful way to integrate
new and legacy components, implemented using different technologies
by different types of developers. This talk will includes brief
descriptions of major components of SOA and how they complement
each other: Message Buses, Business Process Management (BPEL/BPM),
Human Workflow, Complex Event Processing, JCA adapters, SCA. Examples
will be drawn from open source and commercial software. I'll pay
special attention to how how java fits into the SOA world. About
the Presenter: Dave DiFranco is a software engineer building SOA
Governance software for Oracle
Wash U Physics
-Planck's
constant "h"
-- the constant that quantized the
world
Sat, October 15, 10am – 12pm
Professor Alexander Seidel, Department of Physics, Washington U
201 Crow Hall
At the end of the nineteenth century, physicists saw
themselves faced with a conundrum of logical inconsistencies
and baffling experimental facts that no `classical' theory
was able to resolve. The impending revolution of physics
that would unravel this Gordian Knot was triggered in 1900
when Max Planck realized that physics at small scales must
include a hitherto unknown constant of nature -- "h", the
'quantum of action'. In this talk we will explore how the
mere existence of this fundamental constant changes the way
we look at the world, from energy to the uncertainty
principle, and how it hints at physics we do not know yet.
This October is a series on the "basic units" of physics.
The Saturday morning lecture series is intended to be "for
the public" and concentrates on explaining the concepts
without getting deeply into the math.
